Plaza De Armas, San Juan
The Plaza de Armas of San Juan is one of the main squares in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. It is located on San José Street in Old San Juan, and was designed to serve as the original main square for the city. San Juan City Hall is located to the north of the square, while the Puerto Rico Department of State lies at the west. San Francisco (Puerto Rico)
San Francisco, within Old San Juan, is one of the 7 subbarrios of San Juan Antiguo barrio in the municipality of San Juan in Puerto Rico. A historic church, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, is located in San Francisco. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of San Francisco was 1,177. In 2010, the population of San Francisco was 796. Saint Francis of Assisi Church (Church of Saint Francis of Assisi) is located on San Francisco Street. This historic church gives its name to the subdistrict. Teatro Tapia
Teatro Alejandro Tapia y Rivera (commonly referred as "Teatro Tapia"), is the oldest free-standing drama stage building located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is named after Alejandro Tapia y Rivera (1826–1882), a Puerto Rican poet and dramatist. Location The theater faces east, across from Plaza de Colón, on Fortaleza Street, and was constructed in 1824. It was designed in the Italian style as a horseshoe shaped opera house with three tiers of boxes. A block south lies a brick-shaped former ''Casa de camineros'', house of road-maintainers. To the north-east lies a string of cultural institutions: the restored ''Casino de Puerto Rico'', the YMCA, the Carnegie library, the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, and Moorish-inspired Casa de España. The Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País en Puerto Rico (1813–1899) was a learned society in Spanish colonial San Juan, Puerto Rico, modelled after the Sociedad Económica de los Amigos del País in Spain. The society published a newspaper, the short-lived ''Diario Económico de Puerto Rico'' (1814–1815), and organized a library in 1843. ''Chronicling America'' is an open access, open source newspaper database and companion website. It is produced by the United States National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Battle Of San Juan (1797)
__NOTOC__ The Battle of San Juan was an ill-fated British assault in 1797 on the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan in Puerto Rico during the 1796–1808 Anglo-Spanish War. The attack was carried out facing the historic town of Miramar. Background Spain aligned itself with France by signing the Second Treaty of San Ildefonso in 1796. Britain then targeted both countries' Caribbean colonies. Admiral Sir Henry Harvey's fleet picked up Sir Ralph Abercromby's army in Barbados. Together, they captured Trinidad from the Spanish, before heading for San Juan. Battle On 17 April 1797, Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby's fleet of 68 vessels appeared offshore Puerto Rico with a force of 7000, which included German auxiliaries and French émigrés. Two of his frigates then blocked San Juan harbor. The 1787 Boricua earthquake struck offshore of the island of Puerto Rico on May 2. The magnitude of the earthquake was believed to have been around 8.0–8.5, however there is evidence that it was only about 6.9. Capilla Del Cristo
''Capilla del Cristo'' (Chapel of Christ), also called is a small chapel / museum located in the Old San Juan Historic District of Puerto Rico. Built in the 18th century and saved from demolition in the 20th century, the structure has become a cultural icon of Puerto Rico. Most of the articles located at its altar are from 1753. Travel guides list as one of the must-see places of Old San Juan. Cultural significance The chapel with its belfry is located at the end of , a pedestrian walkway in the Old San Juan Historic District in the western section of San Juan Islet.
