Lynching Of Horace Maples
Horace Maples was an African-American man who was lynched by a mob of approximately 2,000 people in Huntsville, Alabama, on September 7, 1904. Maples had been accused of murder and was being held in the county jail when it was set on fire by the crowd. He jumped from a second story window in the jail, but was seized by the crowd and hanged on a tree on the courthouse lawn. Maples' body was then shot full of bullets by people in the crowd. Detailed news reports of the lynching spread quickly across the United States. This report appeared in the weekly ''The Ingham County News'', published in Mason, Michigan, on September 15, 1904: A state court grand jury returned indictments against some of those who actively participated in the lynching, but these were overturned. Lee High School (Huntsville, Alabama)
Lee High School is a four-year public high school that serves students in grades 9–12 from Huntsville, in Madison County, Alabama in the United States, as a part of Huntsville City Schools. History Lee High School was named for the Lee Highway (U.S. Route 72) that ran in front of the old school location in the 1950s, which, in turn, was named after Confederate and Union General Robert E. Lee. The school's mascot is now a 5-Star General and, for many years, a painting of General Robert E. Lee mounted on his horse and holding the Confederate flag was on the Gymnasium wall. In 1974 the flag was painted over and the Generals' mascot is now held to represent no specific person. The original building was constructed in 1957 and opened in the later part of the 1957–1958 school year. Memorial Parkway, also known as the Parkway, is a major thoroughfare in Huntsville, Alabama, Huntsville, Alabama that carries over 100,000 vehicles on average a day. Huntsville Symphony Orchestra
The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra is a symphonic orchestra located in Huntsville, Alabama. The current conducting, conductor and music director is Gregory Vajda. Vajda has been the conductor since the 2011-2012 season. The orchestra's resident conductor is Joseph Lee. History The Huntsville Symphony was founded in 1955 by Alvin Dreger, a cellist from Huntsville. Forty musicians participated, many of whom were scientists in German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun's team. The symphony's first conductor was Dr. Arthur M. Fraser. The HSO is the oldest continuously-operating professional orchestra in the state of Alabama. The Keller was an automobile produced by the Keller Motors Corporation of Huntsville, Alabama, United States, between 1947 and 1950. It was based on the earlier Bobbi-Kar produced by the Bobbi Motor Car Corp. of San Diego, California. Keller Motors restyled the Bobbi-Kar and switched power from a four-cylinder to Hercules engines of and . Redstone Arsenal (RSA) is a United States Army post and a census-designated place (CDP) adjacent to Huntsville in Madison County, Alabama, United States and is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge
The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is a 35,000 acre (142 km2) National Wildlife Refuge located along the Tennessee River near Decatur, Alabama. Named after Major General Joseph Wheeler, it was established to provide a habitat for wintering and migrating birds in the eastern United States. Of the 35,000 acres (142 km2) of the refuge, about 4,085 acres (16.5 km2) are located within Redstone Arsenal. Monte Sano State Park
Monte Sano State Park is a publicly owned recreation area and mountaintop retreat encompassing on the eastern portion of the top and slopes of Monte Sano Mountain on the east side of Huntsville, Alabama.
