Cécile Guéret
Cécile Guéret-Séreguet (born 1954) is an activist and politician in the Central African Republic. She served as mayor of Bangui from 2000 to 2003. A trade unionist and women's rights advocate, she was previously president of both the General Union of Central African Workers and the feminist organization OFCA. Career Labor and feminist activism Guéret joined the Central African labor movement in 1979 and became a prominent leader. As a member of the national bureau of the Union of Central African Workers (USTC), she was arrested and held without trial on July 9, 1991, for her union activity under the regime of President André Kolingba. She became president of the General Union of Central African Workers (UGTC) in 2000. Guéret's labor activism included traveling throughout the country to encourage women workers to organize. Operation Caban
Operation Caban was a bloodless military operation by France in September 1979 to depose Emperor Bokassa I, reinstate the exiled former president David Dacko, and rename the Central African Empire back to Central African Republic. History By January 1979, Emperor Bokassa had become a widely resented autocrat. His fall was precipitated by a decree that all high school students must buy uniforms from a business owned by one of his wives. This led to protests by students in Bangui and rocks thrown at the Emperor's car. In April 1979, Bokassa called in the Central African Armed Forces to put down the agitation and arrest the teenage students. In the following two days, about 100 children were brutally killed and the incident became known as the "children's massacre at Bangui." The coronation of Bokassa I as the Emperor of Central Africa took place on 4 December 1977 at a sports stadium in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Empire. It was the only coronation in the history of the Empire—a short-lived one-party state and self-proclaimed monarchy—which was established in 1976 by Jean-Bédel Bokassa, military dictator and president for life of the Central African Republic. The coronation—which was almost an exact copy of the coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of the French in 1804—and related events were marked by luxury and pomp. Zongo, Democratic Republic Of The Congo
Zongo is a city in Sud-Ubangi Province in the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, lying on the south bank of the Ubangi River, across from Bangui in the Central African Republic. It is linked by ferry to Bangui but has declined in importance as a transport hub since much traffic moved east in the late 1980s.
