Thomas Wise (died 1630)
Sir Thomas Wise (c. 1576–1630), KB, of Sydenham in the parish of Marystow and of Mount Wise in the parish of Stoke Damerel in Devon, was Sheriff of Devon in 1612 and in 1621 served as a member of parliament for Bere Alston in Devon. Origins Wise was the second son and eventual heir of Thomas Wise (1546–1593) of Sydenham, by his wife Mary Buller, a daughter of Richard Buller (died 1556) of Shillingham in Cornwall (ancestor of the prominent Buller family of Morval and of the Buller Baronets). The Wise family is earliest recorded in the Heraldic Visitations of Devon in the person of John Wise (fl.1403) of Sydenham, living in 1403. Thomas James Wise
Thomas James Wise (7 October 1859 – 13 May 1937) was a bibliophile and thief who collected the Ashley Library, now housed by the British Library, and later became known for the literary forgeries he printed and sold. Collecting career Wise began collecting books as a schoolboy, spending his pocket money at the barrows in Farringdon Street. He was a keen collector of first editions in original condition. His interests were poetry followed by drama and his collection dating back to Elizabethan publications was an exhaustive representation. His collection was funded by selling duplicates and acting as an agent for wealthy collectors such as John Henry Wrenn. Wise was given an honorary M.A. degree by the University of Oxford and elected an honorary Fellow of Worcester College for his services to bibliographical science. Thomas Wise (c. 1605 – 18 March 1641) of Sydenham in Devon, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England at various times between 1625 and 1641. Biography Wise was the son of Sir Thomas Wise by his wife Margaret Stafford, daughter of Robert Stafford of Stowford, Devon. Thomas Wise D.D. (1670/71–1726) was an eighteenth-century clergyman of the Church of England. Life He was born at Drayton, Vale of White Horse, the son of John Wise from Dorchester, Oxfordshire. Dr Thomas Alexander Wise MD HEICS FRSE FRCS FRCPE (1802–1889) was a 19th-century Scottish physician, medical author, polymath and collector. He travelled in India, Tibet, China and Japan. He specialised in Tibetan maps and artefacts. He was founder and first Principal of the Hooghly Mohsin College in 1834 and founder of the Hooghly Imambarah Hospital. . Life He was born in or near Dundee on 13 June 1802 the second son of Thomas Wise of Hillbank in Forfarshire. His father had been a physician in Jamaica. He studied Medicine at Edinburgh University graduating MD in 1824. He went to India with the Indian Medical Service and worked first in Dum Dum. Thomas Harold Wise (born 13 May 1948) is a former Independent (politician), Independent and UKIP Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East of England (European Parliament constituency), East of England. A former police officer, he was elected in 2004 as a member of the UK Independence Party but later had the Whip (politics), whip withdrawn when allegations of misuse of parliamentary expenses surfaced in ''The Sunday Telegraph''. Following an inquiry carried out by the European Anti-Fraud Office, Wise was formally charged with false accounting and money laundering by Bedfordshire Police. After initially pleading not guilty, he admitted the charges and was sentenced in November 2009 at Southwark Crown Court to a two-year term of imprisonment. He is thought to be the first MEP to be jailed for expenses fraud.
