Vice Admiral Thomas Wells (1759 – 31 October 1811) was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Naval career Wells joined the Royal Navy in 1774. He became commanding officer of the frigate HMS ''Melampus'' in early 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars. During this time ''Melampus'' participated in the action of 23 April 1794, during which the British took three vessels, , , and . ''Melampus'' had five men killed and five wounded. He went on to be commanding officer of the third-rate HMS ''Defence'' later in 1794 and commanding officer of the second-rate HMS ''Glory'' in 1799. He acted as a pallbearer at the funeral of Lord Nelson in October 1805. Action Of 23 April 1794
The action of 23 April 1794 took place between a British squadron of five frigates under the command of Sir John Borlase Warren and three frigates and a corvette under the command of Chef d'escadre F. Admiral Sir Henry Edwyn Stanhope, 1st Baronet (1754 – 20 December 1814) was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Early life After initial education at a school in East Hill, Wandsworth, Henry Edwyn Stanhope was sent to Winchester College where he became head boy. Subsequent to this he was privately educated before moving on to the University of Oxford. Stanhope spent only a short period of time at Oxford, before his abilities drew the attention of William Ponsonby, 2nd Earl of Bessborough. George Keith Elphinstone, 1st Viscount Keith (7 January 1746 – 10 March 1823), was a British naval officer active throughout the Napoleonic Wars. Career Early service George Elphinstone was the fourth son of Charles Elphinstone, 10th Lord Elphinstone, and his wife Lady Clementina Fleming, the daughter and heiress of John Fleming, 6th Earl of Wigtown. Second-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a second-rate was a ship of the line which by the start of the 18th century mounted 90 to 98 guns on three gun decks; earlier 17th-century second rates had fewer guns and were originally two-deckers or had only partially armed third gun decks. A "second rate" was the second largest class of warships in a hierarchical system of six "ratings" based on size and firepower. In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. Frigate
A frigate () is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have varied somewhat. The name frigate in the 17th to early 18th centuries was given to any full-rigged ship built for speed and maneuverability, intended to be used in scouting, escort and patrol roles.
