Thomas Sweeney (Connecticut Politician)
Thomas F. Sweeney (May 10, 1933 – February 5, 2007) was an American politician. Sweeney was a native of Norwich, Connecticut, born on May 10, 1933, to parents to Thomas P. Sweeney and Jane P. Toomey Sweeney. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Norwich, Connecticut
Norwich ( ) (also called "The Rose of New England") is a city in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The Yantic, Shetucket, and Quinebaug Rivers flow into the city and form its harbor, from which the Thames River flows south to Long Island Sound. The population was 40,125 at the 2020 United States Census. History The town of Norwich was founded on the site of what is now Norwichtown in 1659 by settlers from Saybrook Colony led by Major John Mason and James Fitch. They purchased the land "nine miles square" that became Norwich from Mohegan Sachem Uncas. One of the co-founders of Norwich was Thomas Leffingwell who rescued Uncas when surrounded by his Narragansett enemies, and whose son established the Leffingwell Inn. In 1668, a wharf was established at Yantic Cove. Settlement was primarily in the area around the Norwichtown Green. Peter Nystrom
Peter A. Nystrom (born c. 1957) is an American politician. He was a member of the Norwich City Council from 1979 to 1984, when he won his first election to the Connecticut House of Representatives. Nystrom served as a state representative until 2002. That year, he ran unsuccessfully for seat on the Connecticut Senate. In 2009, Nystrom returned to the Norwich City Council via a special election and won the mayoralty later that year. He relinquished the mayoralty in 2013, began a third stint on the city council in 2015, and was elected to consecutive mayoral terms in 2017 and 2021. Career Nystrom attended Eastern Connecticut State College, and competed for the school's track and cross country teams. Outside of politics, Nystrom drove for the United Parcel Service for 24 years.
