Thomas Kingsland
Thomas Daniel Kingsland (16 June 1862 – 8 December 1933) was a New Zealand cricketer and businessman. He played one first-class match for Otago in 1886/87. Life and career Kingsland's father John (1830–1922) was born in England and migrated to the Victorian goldfields in the 1850s. He was mining at Lower Huntly, near Bendigo, when Thomas was born, and moved to Invercargill in New Zealand later that year. John played cricket for Southland and was Mayor of Invercargill in the 1880s. He founded a tanning, fellmongery and boot manufacturing company in Invercargill, of which Thomas later took charge. An all-rounder, Thomas Kingsland played most of his cricket for Southland, representing them in non-first-class matches between 1878 and 1900, including matches against the Australian touring teams in 1878 (when he was 15), 1880 and 1896. Huntly is a town in northern Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in the City of Greater Bendigo local government area, 169 kilometres north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Huntly had a population of 2,379. History Huntly is a rural township on the Midland Highway, 12 km north-east of Bendigo, but only a few kilometres beyond Bendigo’s urban fringe. The name is thought to have been inspired by Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The name was first given to the local parish in a map drawn in 1854. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Southland Cricket Association
The Southland cricket team represents the Southland Region of New Zealand. They compete in the Hawke Cup. Early history Southland first played interprovincial cricket in 1864, and often played against touring teams from Australia, Fiji and England. The Southland Cricket Association was formed in 1892, leading to an increase in representative matches, including the annual match against Otago, which began in 1893–94 and continued until the 1980s. In 1910–11 Southland were the first winners of the Hawke Cup. They retained it in 1911–12 but surrendered it in 1912–13 when they did not take part. First-class matches Southland had first-class status from 1914–15 to 1920–21. They played eight first-class matches, winning one, losing five and drawing two. Rugby Park Stadium
Rugby Park is a sports venue in Invercargill and the home ground for the Mitre 10 Cup and Southland. Rugby Park is located on the corner of Elles Road and Tweed Street. The ground has a regular season capacity of 18,000. It has a safe temporary seating maximum capacity of 20,000 (although it can accommodate up to 30,000 with pitch seating, large grass banks and concreted standing terraces). An agreement with the Invercargill City Council saw surplus land on the ground used to build the city's new Swimming Complex. The pitch was moved geographically towards the main stand, squared off to Rugby field dimensions (originally a quasi-cricket ground), with all weather seating installed. The Pitch itself was also weather proofed with a new high volume drainage system installed. The ground was constructed specifically for rugby, and was opened in April 1908.
