Thomas Hicks (athlete)
Thomas John Hicks (January 11, 1876 – January 28, 1952) was an American track and field athlete. He won the marathon at the Olympic Games in 1904. Biography Hicks, a brass worker from Cambridge, Massachusetts, was born in England. He was the winner of a remarkable marathon race at the 1904 Summer Olympics, held as part of the World Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Conditions were bad, the course being a dirt track, with large clouds of dust produced by the accompanying vehicles. Hicks was not the first to cross the finish line, trailing Fred Lorz. However, Lorz had abandoned the race after 9 miles. After covering much of the course by car, he re-entered the race 5 miles before the finish. This was discovered by the officials, who disqualified Lorz, who claimed it had been a joke. Thomas Charles Hicks (born 28 August 1979) is an English cricketer. Hicks studied at St Catherine's College, Oxford and all of his first-class appearances as of the end of 2006 had come for Oxford University teams (Oxford University, Oxford Universit''ies'' and Oxford UCCE), apart from one game for British Universities in 1999. His two half-centuries have both come for Oxford against Cambridge University: the higher of these being the 58 he scored in 2001, adding 109 for the ninth wicket with opener Matthew Floyd to help set up a three-wicket victory. He also took 5–77 in the second innings of this game, second only to the 5-54 he claimed in Oxford's win over Northamptonshire in June 2000. Thomas Logan Hicks (born December 18, 1952) is a former American professional football player who played linebacker for five seasons for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL), from 1976 to 1980. His jersey number was 54. During the 1978 NFL season, Hicks suffered a knee injury in Week 10 in a contest against the Seattle Seahawks. He was diagnosed with torn knee ligaments and underwent surgery that evening after the game. He missed the remainder of the 1978 NFL season. Thomas Holliday Hicks (September 2, 1798February 14, 1865) was a politician in the divided border-state of Maryland during the American Civil War. As governor, opposing the Democrats, his views accurately reflected the conflicting local loyalties. He was pro-slavery but anti-secession. Under pressure to call the General Assembly into special session, he held it in the pro-Union town of Frederick, where he was able to keep the state from seceding. In December 1862, Hicks was appointed to the U.S. Senate, where he endorsed Abraham Lincoln's re-election in 1864, but died soon afterwards. Early career Born in 1798 near East New Market, Maryland, Hicks began his political career as a Democrat when he was elected town constable and then, in 1824, elected Sheriff of Dorchester County. Sir Thomas Hicks (born 17 December 1936), known professionally as Tommy Steele, is an English entertainer, regarded as Britain's first teen idol and rock and roll star. After being discovered at the 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho, London, Steele recorded a string of hit singles including "Rock with the Caveman" (1956) and the chart-topper "Singing the Blues" (1957).
