Thomas Gibson (Canadian Politician)
Thomas Gibson (8 January 1825 – 1901) was an Ontario political figure. He represented Huron North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1871 to 1874 and Huron East from 1875 to 1898. He was a Liberal. Life He was born in Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland in Jan 1825, the son of Thomas Gibson (1751–1820) and his wife Helen Lunham. He was educated at the free church school in Greenlaw. He came to Canada West in 1854. He served as reeve for Howick Township for 7 years. He ran unsuccessfully in Huron North in 1867. The township of Gibson, now part of the Township of Georgian Bay in the Muskoka District, was named after him. He died in January 1901 and is buried in Wroxeter, Ontario with his wife Elizabeth (1830–1878). Georgian Bay, Ontario
The Township of Georgian Bay is an area municipality of the District Municipality of Muskoka, in south-central Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Severn River, where it empties into the eponymous Georgian Bay. The municipal offices are at Port Severn. This township is the administrative centre of the Moose Deer Point Ojibway First Nation reserve. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". George Gibson (mathematician)
George Alexander Gibson FRSE LLD (19 April 1858–1 April 1930) was a Scottish mathematician and academic writer. Life He was born on 19 April 1858 in Greenlaw in Berwickshire the third son of Robert Gibson JP (1830–1903). He attended the free church school in the parish, and showing great promise, went to the University of Glasgow where he graduated with an MA in 1882 and immediately joined the University staff. In 1889, aged 29, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, Prof William Jack, Sir Thomas Muir and George Chrystal. He served as the Society's Vice President from 1917 to 1920. He also served as president of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. In 1895 he became a Professor of Mathematics at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Wroxeter, Ontario
Wroxeter, Ontario is a community in Howick Township, part of Huron County. The first settlers of Wroxeter were the Gibson Brothers, Thomas and Robert, who founded the community in the mid-19th century. During its peak period, Wroxeter had five general stores, five hotels, two schools (which ran until 1950), a library, a woolen mill, and a grist mill, and an arena, which ran until it was torn down in the late '70s. Wroxeter also had a railway which was completed in 1874, when a train station was constructed to connect the village to the Toronto area. The population of Wroxeter in the late 19th century is estimated to have been 700–800 people. Today, Wroxeter's old industries have vanished. In 1948, the Township of Howick made Wroxeter an unincorporated village.
