Thomas Prendergast
Thomas Prendergast (180614 November 1886) was a British administrator in the service of the East India Company, and the inventor of the "mastery system" of learning foreign languages. Biography Prendergast was the son of Sir Jeffery Prendergast, born at Clonmel in 1769, who was in the service of the East India Company, becoming colonel of the 39th native infantry in 1825. Sir Jeffery served in the Mysore War, was knighted in 1838, promoted to the rank of general in 1854, and died in 1856, having married in 1804 Elizabeth, daughter of Hew Dalrymple of Nunraw. Thomas was nominated a East India Company#Writers, writer in the East India Company's service on 23 June 1826, and became assistant to the collector of Thanjavur, Tanjore, Madras Presidency, in 1828. He was acting head assistant to the collector of Nellore on 16 January 1829, and head assistant on 9 February 1830. Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Prendergast, 1st Baronet ( 1660 – 11 September 1709) was an Irish politician and soldier. Early life He was the son of Thomas Prendergast (d. 1725) of Croane, County Limerick, a small Catholic landowner, and Eleanor Condon, daughter of Daniel Condon. Little is known of his early life. His family suffered greatly under Oliver Cromwell, and he is thought to have grown up in poverty. Jonathan Swift, who detested him, called him the son of a cottager who narrowly escaped being hanged for stealing cows. However, his friends esteemed him as a man of honour and ability. Career On 15 July 1699 he was created a baronet, of Gort, in the County of Galway. He received his baronetage for informing King William III of the Jacobite plot to ambush the King's coach at Turnham Green. Sir Thomas Prendergast, 2nd Baronet (1702-died 23 September 1760) was an Irish politician. His career was helped by influential family connections, but apparently hampered by his own lack of ability. To Jonathan Swift, who detested him, he was "Noisy Tom", while the King called him "that Irish blockhead". Early life He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Prendergast, 1st Baronet, and his wife Penelope Cadogan, sister of William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan. He was a first cousin of Sarah Lennox, Duchess of Richmond, and was assiduous in using the powerful Lennox connection to further his career. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1709. Thomas Francis Prendergast
Thomas Francis Prendergast or Pendegrast (2 April 1871, Waterford, Ireland – 26 April 1913, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his United States Marine Corps service in the Philippine–American War. Military service Prendergast joined the Marine Corps from Boston in May 1893, and was honorably discharged in July 1907.USMC History Division While a corporal, Prendergast was one of three Marines attached to the Eighth Army Corps, involved in the jungle fighting against the insurgent forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. In his Medal of Honor citation, he was cited for "distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in battle" for actions on March 25, 27, and 29 and April 5, 1899. In this period, American forces cleared the insurgents from the vicinity of Manila and captured the rebel capital of Malolos, forcing Aguinaldo's command northward into the mountains. Tom "Curley" Prendergast is a former Gaelic footballer with Laois. His inter-county career spanned 11 years (1976–87), although he missed out in 1985 when he signed off the panel. In 1986 Prendergast was a member of the National Football League title winning squad.
