Thomas Evans (Medal Of Honor)
Thomas Evans (1824–1866), was a soldier in the Union Army who received the United States military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the American Civil War. Biography Evans was born in Wales in 1824. He joined the Army from Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania in February 1864, and was mustered out in May 1865. On June 5, 1864, his unit engaged a Confederate force at Piedmont, Virginia where he and a fellow soldier, Pvt. James Snedden of Company E, both earned the Medal of Honor. In his report, the 54th Pennsylvania's commander, Colonel J. M. Campbell wrote: Lieut. R.P. Robison of Company B captured Colonel Browne, who commanded a Virginia brigade ic.. James Snedden
James Snedden (September 19, 1849June 14, 1919 (?)) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and emigrated to the United States at an unknown date. On February 23, 1864, during the Civil War, he was mustered in the Union Army at Johnstown, Pennsylvania with the rank of Private, in Company E, 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He became a Musician, a non-combatant role, in that unit, rising to the rank of Principal Musician. On June 5, 1864, the Union and Confederate armies met at Piedmont, Virginia. Colonel Jacob M. Campbell, commander of the 54th, ordered Snedden to take his musicians to the rear. Having done so, he took a rifle from a wounded comrade, went to the front, joined in the fighting, and captured Colonel Beuhring Jones, commander of the 60th Virginia Infantry . The Confederate States Army, also called the Confederate Army or the Southern Army, was the military land force of the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the Confederacy) during the American Civil War (1861–1865), fighting against the United States forces to win the independence of the Southern states and uphold the institution of slavery. On February 28, 1861, the Provisional Confederate Congress established a provisional volunteer army and gave control over military operations and authority for mustering state forces and volunteers to the newly chosen Confederate president, Jefferson Davis. 45th Virginia Infantry
The 45th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in the Virginia, Commonwealth of Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly in the mountainous area that today encompasses the border regions of Virginia and West Virginia, and was part of Jubal Early, Jubal Early's Army of the Valley during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The Institute of Heraldry remains within the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. Piedmont is an unincorporated community in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. Piedmont is located northeast of Staunton, Virginia and north-northwest of Waynesboro, Virginia. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Piedmont between Union forces under Maj. Gen. David Hunter and Confederate forces under William E. Jones was fought on June 5, 1864 just north of Piedmont. During the battle, Jones was killed and Hunter's forces captured nearly 1,000 Confederate prisoners.
