Thomas D. Collins
Thomas D. Collins (August 14, 1847 - May 26, 1935) was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Collins received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Resaca in Georgia on 15 May 1864. He was honored with the award on 14 August 1896. Biography Collins was born in Neversink, New York on 14 August 1847. Neversink, New York
Neversink is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,366 at the 2020 census. The Town of Neversink is in the northeastern corner of the county. The Neversink River that flows through the town is claimed to be the birthplace of American fly fishing. History The town was formed from the Town of Rochester in Ulster County, New York in 1798 before Sullivan County was formed. The Town of Rockland was created from part of Neversink in 1809, and part of Neversink was used to make the newer Town of Fallsburg in 1826. When the Neversink and Rondout reservoirs were built, as part of the New York City water supply system, many communities were submerged. The communities of Old Neversink and Bittersweet were lost to form the Neversink Reservoir, while Eureka, Montela, and Lackawack were lost to form the Rondout Reservoir. The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the United States Armed Forces' highest military decoration and is awarded to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The medal is normally awarded by the president of the United States, but as it is presented "in the name of the United States Congress", it is sometimes erroneously referred to as the "Congressional Medal of Honor". Find a Grave is a website that allows the public to search and add to an online database of cemetery records. It is owned by Ancestry.com. Its stated mission is "to help people from all over the world work together to find, record and present final disposition information as a virtual cemetery experience." Volunteers can create memorials, upload photos of grave markers or deceased persons, transcribe photos of headstones, and more. , the site claimed more than 210 million memorials. Hillside Cemetery (Middletown, New York)
Hillside Cemetery is located on Mulberry Street in Middletown, New York, United States. Opened in 1861, it was designed in the rural cemetery style by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, later noted for their collaboration on Central Park. There are several thousand graves, some with excellent examples of 19th-century funerary art. Many of Middletown's prominent citizens of the late 19th century were buried there, including three Civil War winners of the Medal of Honor and one former congressman. The Battle of Resaca, from May 13 to 15, 1864, formed part of the Atlanta Campaign during the American Civil War, when a Union force under William Tecumseh Sherman engaged the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by Joseph E. Johnston. The battle was fought in Gordon and Whitfield Counties, Georgia, and is generally viewed as inconclusive. The campaign began with Johnston holding strong defensive positions at Buzzard's Roost Gap and Rocky Face Ridge, which he hoped Sherman would assault.
