Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl Of Dundonald
Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald (1691 – 31 October 1778) was a Scottish nobleman, army officer and politician. He was Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire, 1722–1727. He served as Commissioner of the Excise for Scotland from 1730 until 1764. He acceded to the title of Earl of Dundonald in 1758 on the death of his cousin, William Cochrane, 7th Earl of Dundonald. Early life and education Thomas was born in 1691, the seventh son of William Cochrane of Ochiltree, and his wife Lady Mary Bruce, eldest daughter of Alexander Bruce, 2nd Earl of Kincardine. As a younger son, he would not inherit his father's property, so he entered the army. He became a cornet in the Royal Regiment of Dragoons in 1713, and a captain in the 27th Regiment of Foot in 1716. Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl Of Dundonald
Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, Marquess of Maranhão (14 December 1775 – 31 October 1860), styled Lord Cochrane between 1778 and 1831, was a British naval flag officer of the Royal Navy, mercenary and Radical politician. He was a successful captain of the Napoleonic Wars, leading Napoleon to nickname him french: le Loup des Mers, lit=the Sea Wolf, label=none. He was successful in virtually all of his naval actions. He was dismissed from the Royal Navy in 1814 after a controversial conviction for fraud on the Stock Exchange. He helped organise and lead the rebel navies of Chile and Brazil during their respective successful wars of independence through the 1820s. While in charge of the Chilean Navy, Cochrane also contributed to Peruvian independence through the Freedom Expedition of Perú. He was also hired to help the Greek Navy, but did not have much impact. Thomas Barnes Cochrane, 11th Earl of Dundonald (14 April 1814 – 15 January 1885) was a Scottish nobleman. He was son of the radical politician and sailor Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald. As a child he accompanied his father to Chile as a stowaway on the Chilean frigate O'Higgins (1816). In February 1819 the O'Higgins attempted to raid the city of Callao, but was repelled by the coastal fortresses. Thomas Cochrane 11th was almost hit by a cannonball, which instead killed a sailor next to him. Cochrane joined the British Army and eventually gained the rank of Captain. On 31 October 1860, he succeeded his father as the 11th Earl of Dundonald. Between 1879 and 1885, he was a Representative Peer of Scotland. Thomas Hesketh Douglas Blair Cochrane, 13th Earl of Dundonald (21 February 1886 – 23 May 1958) was an officer in the British Army who served in World War I. He was a representative peer for Scotland and chairman of the Anglo-Chilean Society. Life Cochrane was born on 21 February 1886, the son of Douglas Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald and Winifred Bamford-Hesketh (died 1924). He reached the rank of captain in the Scots Guards and fought in World War I, serving on the General Staff. Thomas Horatio Arthur Ernest Cochrane, 1st Baron Cochrane of Cults (2 April 1857 – 17 January 1951), was a Scottish soldier and Liberal Unionist politician. He was Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department under Arthur Balfour between 1902 and 1905. Background and education Cochrane was the second son of Thomas Cochrane, 11th Earl of Dundonald, and Louisa Harriet, daughter of William Mackinnon, and the younger brother of Douglas Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald. He was educated at Eton and Cheltenham College. Military career Cochrane was an honorary lieutenant colonel of the 4th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and served in the 93rd Highlanders and the Scots Guards. Thomas Cochrane (said to have been executed and Asset forfeiture, forfeited 1482), also referred to as 'Robert Cochrane' in sixteenth-century chronicle accounts, was a royal servant and alleged 'familiar' or favourite of King James III of Scotland. Chronicle accounts allege that his influence over the king incurred the wrath of the old aristocracy, culminating in a ''coup'' at Lauder in which James III was arrested and Cochrane was executed. There exists uncertainty about even the most basic facts of Cochrane's life. Even his correct first name has been disputed, which is given as both Thomas and Robert by different 16th century chroniclers. Contemporary sources however only mention a Thomas Cochrane as an officer of the king in the late 1470s and early 1480s. Thomas Cochrane M.B. C.M (1866–1953) was a Scottish medical missionary. He is notable for founding the first school to teach western medicine to Chinese trainee doctors, and for his influential London-based campaigns to promote missionary work. Early life Cochrane was brought up in Greenock, Scotland. In 1882, he was inspired to become a missionary after listening to the evangelical preacher Dwight L. Moody. He trained to be a doctor at the University of Glasgow, and in 1897 traveled to China with the London Missionary Society. Work in China Cochrane arrived in Chaoyang hospital, Mongolia when the country was in the throes of the Boxer Rebellion. Braving threats from bandits, he traveled from village to village in an ox cart dispensing medical aid. Thomas William Cochrane ( ; born May 14, 1953) is a Canadian musician best known as the frontman for the rock band Red Rider and for his work as a solo singer-songwriter. Cochrane has won eight Juno Awards. He is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an officer of the Order of Canada, and has an honorary doctorate from Brandon University. In September 2009, he was inducted onto the Canadian Walk of Fame.
