Thomas Cave (Liberal Politician)
Thomas Cave (16 October 1825 – 2 November 1894) was a British Liberal politician. Political career Cave was returned to Parliament for Barnstaple in 1865, a seat he held until 1880. He also served as Sheriff of London between 1863 and 1864 and was a Justice of the Peace for Surrey. Family Cave married Elizabeth, daughter of Jasper Shallcrass, in 1849. They had five sons, including Lord Chancellor George Cave, 1st Viscount Cave and Basil Cave, Consul-General in Zanzibar Zanzibar (; ; ) is an insular semi-autonomous province which united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Two sheriffs are elected annually for the City of London by the Liverymen of the City livery companies. Today's sheriffs have only nominal duties, but the historical officeholders had important judicial responsibilities. They have attended the justices at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, since its original role as the court for the City and Middlesex. Sir Robert Carden, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Walter Carden, 1st Baronet (7 October 1801 – 19 January 1888) was a British banker and Conservative politician. Carden was the son of James Carden and his wife Mary (née Walter), who was a daughter of John Walter, founder of The Times newspaper. In 1816, he took a commission in the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot. Later a successful banker, he was knighted in 1851. He served as Sheriff of London in 1850 and was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1857. He was elected to the House of Commons as one of two representatives for Gloucester in 1857, a seat he held until 1859. Carden was out of Parliament for more than twenty years, but returned in 1880 when he was elected Member of Parliament for Barnstaple, which he remained until 1885. Apart from his business and political career he also served as a Justice of the Peace for Surrey and Middlesex. In June 1887, aged 85, he was created a baronet, of Molesey in the County of Surrey. Newton Wallop, 6th Earl of Portsmouth JP, DL (19 January 1856 – 4 December 1917), styled Viscount Lymington until 1891, was a British Liberal politician but then joined the Liberal Unionist Party in 1886. He later switched back to the Liberal Party to serve as Under-Secretary of State for War under Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman from 1905 to 1908. Background and education Lymington was born in Hurstbourne Priors, Hampshire, the eldest son of Isaac Wallop, 5th Earl of Portsmouth, and his wife Lady Eveline Alicia Juliana Herbert, daughter of Henry Herbert, 3rd Earl of Carnarvon. He was educated at Eton College and from 1876 to 1879 at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford Union. Samuel Danks Waddy
Samuel Danks Waddy (27 June 1830 – 30 December 1902) was an English politician. He was born in Gateshead, the son of Samuel Dousland Waddy, a Methodist minister. The family soon moved to Sheffield and his father was instrumental in the founding of Wesley College in 1838 (and was Governor of the school from 1844 to 1862). Samuel Danks Waddy attended Wesley College himself and was the first pupil to be registered in 1838. He graduated with a BA from London University in 1850, and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1858. He became a King's Counsel (KC) in 1874, and became a bencher of his Inn two years later. Waddy was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnstaple, Devon on 3 February 1874 but resigned this seat in December 1879 to stand in a by-election in the Sheffield constituency, taking the seat on 21 December 1879.
