Thomas Byrne (Dublin Politician)
Thomas N. Byrne (7 November 1917 – 16 March 1978) was an Irish Independent politician. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin North-West at a by-election on 12 November 1952. The by-election was caused by the death of his brother, A. P. Byrne. He was re-elected at the 1954 and 1957 general elections. He lost his seat at the 1961 general election. His father Alfie Byrne was an MP, TD, Senator and Lord Mayor of Dublin. Thomas Byrne (born 1 June 1977) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and solicitor who was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media in December 2022. He previously served as Minister of State for European Affairs from July 2020 to December 2022. He has served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Meath East from 2007 to 2011, and subsequently since 2016, during which period he held the position of Dáil Éireann opposition front bench spokesperson for Education and Skills. Thomas Byrne, VC (December 1866 Dublin – 15 March 1944) was an Irish British Army soldier. He was the recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Deed He was about 30 years old, and a private in the 21st Lancers (Empress of India's), British Army during the Mahdist War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC: On 2 September 1898 at the Battle of Omdurman, Sudan, Private Byrne turned back in the middle of the charge of the 21st Lancers and went to the assistance of a lieutenant of the Royal Horse Guards who was wounded, dismounted, disarmed and being attacked by several Dervishes. Thomas Sebastian Byrne (July 28, 1841 – September 4, 1923) was an American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Nashville in Tennessee from 1894 until his death in 1923. Biography Early life Thomas Byrne was born on July 28, 1841, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Irish immigrants Eugene and Mary Anne (née Reynolds) Byrne. Eugene Byrne died when he was only nine months old; Thomas Byrne left school at age 11 to become an apprentice machinist. Byrne had frequently served as an altar boy to Stephen Badin, the first Catholic priest ordained in the United States.
