Thomas Albert (politician)
Thomas Albert (born April 12, 1985) is an American politician from Michigan. Albert is a Republican member of the Michigan Senate from the 18th district. Albert previously served as a member of Michigan House of Representatives from District 86. Early life Albert was born in Grattan Township, Michigan on April 12, 1985, to Jim Albert, a teacher, and Edna Albert, a social worker; both are now retired. He is the youngest of five brothers. He attended elementary school in Ada Township, Michigan, and attended Belding High School. Education In 2007, Albert earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/History from University of Michigan, and in 2013, he earned an MBA in Finance at Michigan State University. Michigan's 18th Senate District
Michigan's 18th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 18th district was created by the 1850 Michigan Constitution, as the 1835 constitution only permitted a maximum of eight senate districts. It has been represented by Republican Thomas Albert since 2023, succeeding Democrat Jeff Irwin. Geography District 18 encompasses all of Barry County, as well as parts of Allegan, Calhoun, Ionia, Kalamazoo, and Kent counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 18, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, was based in the city of Ann Arbor – home to the University of Michigan – also covering the nearby Washtenaw County communities of Ypsilanti, Saline, Pittsfield Township, Ypsilanti Township, and Superior Township. Michigan State University
Michigan State University (Michigan State, MSU) is a public university, public Land-grant university, land-grant research university in East Lansing, Michigan. It was founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, the first of its kind in the United States. It is considered a Public Ivy, or a public institution which offers an academic experience similar to that of an Ivy League university. An election was held on November 6, 2018 to elect all 110 members to Michigan's House of Representatives. The election coincided with elections for other offices, including U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor and Senate. The primary election was held on August 7, 2018. Republicans retained control of the House, despite losing the popular vote, after a net loss of five seats, winning 58 seats compared to 52 seats for the Democrats. Term-limited members Under the Michigan Constitution, members of the state Senate are able to serve only two four-year terms, and members of the House of Representatives are limited to three two-year terms, some of the toughest term-limit laws in the country. After the 2018 mid-term elections, nearly 70 percent of the state Senate and 20 percent of the state House were forced to leave office because of term-limits.
