This Week In Politics
''This Week in Politics'' is a weekly political news and talk program on CNN. Originally started as ''This Week at War'', the program focused on the week's news regarding U.S.-involved wars, security in the United States, and terrorism. Due to much excitement over the 2008 presidential election season, the title was changed to ''This Week in Politics'' in January 2008. Airing on CNN/US, the program appeared at 6 p.m. ET Saturdays and 2 p.m. ET Sundays, hosted by Tom Foreman. Tom Foreman
Tom Foreman (born December 6, 1959) is an American broadcast journalist for CNN whose reporting experience spans more than three decades. Beginning as a local television reporter in Montgomery, Alabama, at WSFA, he continued on to work for WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1990, Foreman relocated to Denver, Colorado, as a national network correspondent for ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and Nightline. In 2000, Foreman signed with National Geographic and anchored National Geographic Today, a daily news story focusing on major scientific and breaking nature news, and Inside Base Camp, for which he won an Emmy award as best interviewer. He joined CNN in 2004, and currently works out of CNN's Washington DC Bureau covering a wide range topics from breaking political news to international crises. Terrorism
Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is the use of criminal violence to provoke a state of terror or fear, mostly with the intention to achieve political or religious aims. The term is used in this regard primarily to refer to intentional violence during peacetime or in the context of war against non-combatants (mostly civilians and neutral country, neutral military personnel). The terms "terrorist" and "terrorism" originated during the French Revolution of the late 18th century but became widely used internationally and gained worldwide attention in the 1970s during The Troubles, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Basque conflict, and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The increased use of suicide attacks from the 1980s onwards was typified by the 2001 September 11 attacks in the United States. 2008 United States Presidential Election
The 2008 United States presidential election was the 56th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. The Democratic ticket of Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, and Joe Biden, the senior senator from Delaware, defeated the Republican ticket of John McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, and Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. Obama became the first African American to be elected to the presidency, as well as being only the third sitting United States senator elected president, joining Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy. Meanwhile, Biden became the first senator running mate of a senator elected president since Lyndon B. Johnson (who was Kennedy's running mate) in the 1960 election.
