Pulp (band)
Pulp are an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 1978. Their best-known line-up from their heyday (1992–1997) consisted of Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Nick Banks (drums, percussion), Steve Mackey (bass) and Mark Webber (guitar, keyboards). Throughout the 1980s the band struggled to find success, but gained prominence in the UK in the mid-1990s with the release of the albums '' His 'n' Hers'' in 1994 and particularly '' Different Class'' in 1995, which reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart. ''Freaks'' (released with the subtitle ''Ten Stories About Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation and Holding Hands'') is the second studio album by English rock band Pulp, released on 11 May 1987 by Fire Records. Release and aftermath ''Freaks'' was released in 1987 to little commercial success and features a much darker sound than its predecessor, '' It''. Russell Senior sings lead vocals on "Fairground" and "Anorexic Beauty". "Master of the Universe" was released as a single in an alternative version called the "sanitised version"; it replaces the word "masturbates" with "vegetates". "I Want You" is the only song from the album to have been performed live regularly, most notably during the UK Forest Tour in the Summer of 2002. The album was reissued and remastered by Fire Records in 2012 along with 1983's ''It'' and 1992's '' Separations''. Fire Records was an American independent record label, set up in 1959 by Bobby Robinson. Amongst others, it released records by Lightnin' Hopkins, Elmore James, Buster Brown and Arthur Crudup. At one point it was thought Fire had issued the last commercial 78rpm disc in the United States. Although this has been dis-proven, the label is still known for their late-issue 78s. ''Masters of the Universe'' is a compilation by the English alternative rock band Pulp, released in 1994. Background The compilation brings together the four Pulp singles released on Fire Records between 1985 and 1987, with the exception of "Silence" (originally from the "Master of the Universe" single), which was left off at Jarvis Cocker's request. The two differences of "Master of the Universe (sanitised version)" from the album version are the substitutions of the word "masturbates" with "vegetates" and "cums" with "keeps". The original version can be found on the album ''Freaks''. Almost all tracks from this compilation were included on ''Freaks'' 2012 reissue bonus disc.
