The Dog Who Carries His Master’s Dinner Round His Neck
The dog who carries his master’s dinner round his neck is one of La Fontaine's Fables (VIII/7) published in 1678. A story of relatively recent origin then, it was directed against city authorities who defrauded the public funds. The fable The fable concerns a dog who has been taught to control its appetite when delivering its master’s dinner while he is at work. It defends its load when attacked by another dog but, when other dogs join the fight, proposes that they share in the spoil and seizes a large piece for itself. La Fontaine’s opening four lines muse on the difficulty humans have in restraining their instincts before he proceeds to an example of an animal who has been so trained and only breaks down when forced by circumstances. He then draws a parallel with the behaviour of those charged with administering public funds. La Fontaine's Fables
Jean de La Fontaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. Humorous, nuanced and ironical, they were originally aimed at adults but then entered the educational system and were required learning for school children. Composition history Divided into 12 books, there are 239 of the ''Fables'', varying in length from a few lines to some hundred, those written later being as a rule longer than those written earlier. The first collection of ''Fables Choisies'' had appeared March 31, 1668, dividing 124 fables into six books over its two volumes. Jean-Baptiste Oudry
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (; 17 March 1686 – 30 April 1755) was a French Rococo painter, engraver, and tapestry designer. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic pictures of animals and his hunt pieces depicting game. His son, Jacques-Charles Oudry, was also a painter. Biography Jean-Baptiste Oudry was born in Paris, the son of Jacques Oudry, a painter and art dealer, and his wife Nicole Papillon,Bryan,1886-9 relative of the engraver Jean-Baptiste-Michel Papillon. His father was a director of the Académie de Saint-Luc art school, which Oudry joined. At first, Oudry concentrated on portraiture, and he became a pupil and perhaps a collaborator of Nicolas de Largillière from 1707 to 1712. He graduated at only 22 years of age, on 21 May 1708, at the same time as his two older brothers.
