The Woody Woodpecker And Friends Classic Cartoon Collection
''The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection'' is a three-disc DVD collection of theatrical cartoons produced by Walter Lantz Productions for Universal Pictures between 1930 and 1956. The set was released by Universal Studios Home Entertainment on July 24, 2007, and marks the first time a collection of cartoons starring Woody Woodpecker and the other Lantz characters have been widely available on home video (a previous fifteen-volume collection of ''Woody Woodpecker Show'' DVDs was made available for mail order through Columbia House in the early 2000s). Included in the set are 75 cartoon shorts, including the first 45 ''Woody Woodpecker'' cartoons, in production order. Walter Lantz Productions
Walter Lantz Productions was an American animation studio. It was in operation from 1928 to 1972 and was the principal supplier of animation for Universal Studios. The studio was originally formed as Universal Cartoon Studios on the initiative of Universal movie mogul Carl Laemmle, who was tired of the continuous company politics he was dealing with concerning contracting cartoons outside animation studios. Walter Lantz, who was Laemmle's part-time chauffeur and a veteran of the John R. Bray Studios with considerable experience in all elements of animation production, was selected to run the department. In 1935, the studio was severed from Universal and became Walter Lantz Studio under Lantz's direct control, and in 1939, renamed to Walter Lantz Productions. Lantz managed to gain the copyright for his characters. King Klunk
''King Klunk'' is a 1933 animation, animated short subject, produced and directed by Walter Lantz. It stars Pooch the Pup and is the twelfth of the thirteen cartoons featuring that character. The cartoon is a parody of the RKO feature ''King Kong (1933 film), King Kong'', which premiered six months earlier to this cartoon's release on September 4, 1933 from Universal Pictures. Plot Pooch and a girl coonhound sail into Africa, looking to take photographs of King Klunk, the largest gorilla in the planet. On the continent, a pack of chimpanzees are doing a dance ritual as well preparing a meal for their gigantic gorilla leader. King Klunk immediately shows up, excited to get his lunch, but when Klunk sees that the amount of food in the platter is inadequate, he rejects it. The Merry Old Soul
''The Merry Old Soul'' is a 1933 animated short film by Walter Lantz Productions, as part of the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series. The cartoon was nominated for an Academy Award. Plot Oswald goes to a dental clinic for treatment to his cavity problem. While the dentist tries to pull out his damaged tooth, news break out of a radio in the shop, reporting that the king is in serious depression and needs to be cheered up. In this, Oswald abandons his dental treatment, and heads outside to spread the word. In his castle, Old King Cole is having a long face for some reason. His personal jester tries to brighten him up but to no avail, and therefore, leaves the throne room. Oswald then shows up and reads to him a book of comical rhymes. The rabbit's attempt helps a little and the king's mood improves slightly. ''Confidence'' is a Pre-Code animated short subject, produced by Walter Lantz, directed by Bill Nolan, and featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. In the film, Oswald was voiced by multiple actors in this short. Oswald is a farmer whose farm falls prey to the ominous influence of the Great Depression (personified as a dark, shadowy figure). Determined to find a solution, Oswald flies to Washington, D.C. where he meets President Franklin D. Roosevelt. ''Grandma's Pet'' is an animated short film by Walter Lantz Productions and is part of the ''Oswald the Lucky Rabbit'' series. It is the 53rd Lantz Oswald cartoon and the 106th cartoon overall. Plot One night, Oswald is reading to three kittens the story of ''Little Red Riding Hood''. After reading his book, he falls to sleep in his bed. Oswald then dreams of the live female stuffed doll (his second girlfriend in the series) being like the title character of the story he just read: walking through the woods in a red hood and carrying a basket. He even dreams of himself in the scene, accompanying her. On the way, they meet a large wolf who desperately wants a share of the goods in the doll's basket. Plot First glimpsed stalking through a cemetery, a phantom is seen, wearing a hat, mask and coat (who, being magical, will later be shown to be able to fly as well as pass through small openings). While travelling through the air, the phantom finds a studio where actors are making auditions while others are doing rehearsals. As he enters, he sees a female cat weeping. The phantom approaches her and asks why she is crying. Speaking unintelligibly, the cat tells him she desperately wants to sing at the audition and possibly make it to concerts. ''Ski for Two'' is the 12th cartoon short in the ''Woody Woodpecker'' series. Released theatrically on November 13, 1944, the film was produced by Walter Lantz Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures. Plot Woody is sifting through some travel magazines when he spots a tempting ad for the Swiss Chard Lodge. The lodge is situated in Idaho, and offers dining for its guests. Woody is ecstatic, and promptly books a train ticket. After disembarking at the train station at Sunstroke Valley, it becomes apparent that the lodge is still an additional 40 miles, with no adjacent roads or any form of transportation. Woody decides to take matters into his own hands by taking a short cut, skiing and singing his way through the mountains. The Beach Nut
''The Beach Nut'' is the 11th animated cartoon short subject in the ''Woody Woodpecker'' series. Released theatrically on October 16, 1944, the film was produced by Walter Lantz Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures. The title is a play on " beech nut". Wally decides to go to the beach to relax for his day off, but is constantly disturbed by surfer Woody. Returning to the present, Wally ties Woody to an anchor and hurls him into the ocean. The rope snags on the pier, demolishing first the pier and then the entire marina. The cartoon ends with Woody swimming away toward the horizon, pursued by Wally, and both of them pursued by the other beachgoers. Production notes ''The Beach Nut'' marked the debut of Woody Woodpecker's recurring antagonist, Wally Walrus. ''The Barber of Seville'' is the tenth animated cartoon short subject in the ''Woody Woodpecker'' series. Released theatrically on April 22, 1944, the film was produced by Walter Lantz Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures. Plot Woody arrives at ''Tony Figaro's'' barber shop in hopes of getting a ''victory haircut'' (a then-contemporary World War II reference). Finding the shop's proprietor out for an Army physical, Woody attempts to cut his own hair and those of other customers. The first customer that comes in is a Native American who asks for a quick shampoo, and Woody then makes a mess shampooing the man's head, which then causes the man's headdress to shrink into a badminton birdie. The angry Indian then threatens to scalp Woody for ''giving him the bird'', but Woody quickly knocks the customer out cold with a mallet and sends him out the door, where he ends up standing perfectly still on a pedestal in front of a tobacco shop, holding cigars.
