The Virginian (1923 Film)
''The Virginian'' is a 1923 American silent Western film based upon the 1902 Owen Wister novel '' The Virginian'' and adapted from the popular 1904 theatrical play which Wister had collaborated on with playwright Kirke La Shelle. The film stars Kenneth Harlan as the Virginian and Russell Simpson as Trampas and was directed by Tom Forman. With the advent of talkies, the film was soon overshadowed by the 1929 motion picture '' The Virginian'' with Gary Cooper and Walter Huston. Tom Forman (actor)
Tom Forman (February 22, 1893 – November 7, 1926) was an American motion picture actor, director, writer, and producer of the early 1920s. Life and career Texas-born Forman made his first film for Jesse L. Lasky's production company in 1914. With the exception of service at the front during World War I, he had a successful career as both an actor and director. Forman directed Lon Chaney Sr., Lon Chaney's ''Shadows (1922 film), Shadows'' (1922), but his biggest achievement was realised directing the second screen version of Owen Wister's ''The Virginian (1923 film), The Virginian'' (1923). After his career faltered, he was reduced to working on cheap Poverty Row melodramas. Forman is also known for his work with Edith Taliaferro in ''Young Romance (film), Young Romance''. Pat O'Malley (actor Born 1890)
Pat O'Malley (September 3, 1890 – May 21, 1966) was an American vaudeville and stage performer prior to starting a prolific film career at the age of sixteen. He later had a career in television. Career O'Malley was born as Patrick Henry O'Malley, Jr. in Forest City, Pennsylvania. He had circus experience by the time he discovered an interest in motion pictures. His screen career dates from the days of Kalem and Edison Studios. From 1918 to 1927 he appeared in scores of silent films as both a leading man and a character actor i.e.: '' The Heart of Humanity'', '' My Wild Irish Rose'', '' The Virginian'' and in the adaptation of bestseller ''Brothers Under the Skin''.
