''The Virgin and Child'', commonly known as The Northbrook Madonna after the Northbrook Collection in England, is a painting from the early 16th century (around 1505) by an unknown artist possibly identified as Domenico Alfani. It is in the permanent collection of the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. It was formerly attributed to Raphael, but scholars have since concluded otherwise. Description The Madonna is wearing a red blouse and a dark blue skirt. She and the infant are both fair skinned with light red-orange hair. Behind them is a green landscape receding to blue mountains under a blue sky. A brown structure is on the right side of the landscape. History The painting takes its name from having been in the Northbrook Collection in England. The painting was donated to the Worcester Art Museum in 1940. Domenico Alfani
Domenico Alfani di Paride () was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active chiefly in his native Perugia. Life He was born at Perugia in 1483. He was a contemporary of Raphael, with whom he studied in the school of Pietro Perugino. The two artists were close friends, and the influence of Raphael is so evident in the works of Alfani that they have frequently been attributed to the more famous artist. He utilized the design given by Raphael for an altarpiece in the Church of ''San Simone dei Carmini'', Perugia, now it is called as '' Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria.'' Towards the close of his life Alfani gradually changed his style and approximated to that of the later Florentine school. The picture representing the ''Madonna and Child'' is one of his earliest known works, which is at the ''Collegio Gregoriano'' at Perugia. ''The Milford Daily News'' is an American daily newspaper covering Milford, Massachusetts, and several nearby towns in Norfolk and Worcester counties. The newspaper is managed and printed by ''The MetroWest Daily News''. Both are owned by Gannett. Pietro Perugino (, ; – 1523), born Pietro Vannucci, was an Italian Renaissance Painting, painter of the Umbrian school, who developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael was his most famous pupil. Early years He was born Pietro Vannucci in Città della Pieve, Umbria, the son of Cristoforo Maria Vannucci. His nickname characterizes him as from Perugia, the chief city of Umbria. Scholars continue to dispute the socioeconomic status of the Vannucci family. While certain academics maintain that Vannucci worked his way out of poverty, others argue that his family was among the wealthiest in the town. His exact date of birth is not known, but based on his age at death that was mentioned by Giorgio Vasari, Vasari and Giovanni Santi, it is believed that he was born between 1446 and 1452. Small Cowper Madonna
The ''Small Cowper Madonna'' is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael, depicting Mary and Child, in a typical Italian countryside. It has been dated to around 1504–1505, the middle of the High Renaissance. Story It is not known exactly why the ''Small Cowper Madonna'' was painted. It was probably either a private commission or for the general art market; images of the Madonna and Child were often given as wedding presents. It is widely thought that the church on the right hand side of the painting is the church of San Bernardino, where the Dukes of Urbino (where Raphael was born) were buried, and it has been suggested that the presence of the church means the painting may have been "commissioned by the family for devotional purposes." At the same time, it could just be Raphael drawing on memories of the church, which would have been near where he grew up in Urbino.
