The Vinyl Cafe
The Vinyl Cafe was an hour-long radio variety show hosted by Stuart McLean that was broadcast on CBC Radio and was syndicated to approximately 80 U.S. public radio stations through Public Radio International. It aired on Sunday at noon ET and Tuesday at 11:00 pm ET on CBC Radio One and Saturday at 9 am ET on CBC Radio 2. The program was also available as a CBC podcast, although the podcasts usually contained just McLean's stories and essays for studio episodes because of copyright restrictions on recorded music. CBC Radio also aired a separate weekday afternoon program, under the title ''Vinyl Cafe Stories'', which consisted of two previously recorded Dave and Morley stories per episode. The show was produced independently by McLean and sold to the CBC. Each season had approximately 26 new episodes. Half of those were recorded in the studio and the other half were done with live audiences in theatres across Canada and the United States. One episode was recorded onboard VIA ...

Variety Show
Variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts including musical performances, sketch comedy, magic, acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. It is normally introduced by a compère (master of ceremonies) or host. The variety format made its way from the Victorian era stage in Britain and America to radio and then television. Variety shows were a staple of English language television from the late 1940s into the 1980s. While the format is still widespread in some parts of the world, such as in the United Kingdom with the '' Royal Variety Performance'', the Philippines with ''Eat Bulaga!'' and '' It's Showtime'', and South Korea with '' Running Man'', the proliferation of multichannel television and evolving viewer tastes have affected the popularity of variety shows in the United States. Despite this, their influence has still had a major effect on late night television whose late-night talk shows and NBC's vari ...

This differs from regular News broadcasting, news broadcasts that place emphasis on news reports presented for simple presentation as soon as possible, often with a minimum of analysis. It is also different from the news magazine show format in that events are discussed immediately. The UK's BBC programmes, such as ''This World (TV series), This World'', ''Panorama (TV series), Panorama'', ''Real Story'', ''BBC Scotland Investigates'', ''Spotlight (NI), Spotlight'', ''Week In Week Out'', and ''Inside Out (2002 TV programme), Inside Out'', fit the definition. In Canada, CBC Radio produces a number of current affairs shows both nationally, such as ''The Current (radio program), The Current'' and ''As It Happens'', as well as regionally with morning current affairs shows such as ''Information Morning'' — a focus the radio network developed in the 1970s as a ...
