The Users (1978 Film)
''The Users'' is a 1978 American made-for-television drama film directed by Joseph Hardy. The film, whose executive producer was Aaron Spelling, is based on a Joyce Haber novel released in the same year. The film focuses on the insiders of the Hollywood film industry. Plot Elena Scheider (Smith) is a prostitute with class who is hired by film producer Adam Baker (Hamilton) to seduce Randy Brent (Curtis), an actor who is working in Phoenix on his latest film ''The Last Man'', presumably, a post-apocalyptic, dystopian thriller film. Since the death of his wife, who committed suicide by overdose seven years ago, Randy has retired from the screen and he is now seen as a has-been. ''The Last Man'' is his first venture since the tragedy, but he has trouble shooting the love scenes. Elena successfully seduces him and he soon falls in love with her. Joyce Haber
Joyce Haber (1931–1993) was an American gossip columnist who worked for the ''Los Angeles Times''. Haber was one of Hollywood's last powerful gossip columnists who "were capable of canonizing a film or destroying a star". She took over the old job of Hedda Hopper. Haber left the ''Times'' in 1976 to write a roman a clef titled ''The Users''. It was her only novel, rose to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List, and was made into a tele-film with the same name. She was married to television producer Douglas S. Cramer from 1966-1972 and had two children, Douglas S. Cramer III and Courtney Cramer, with him. In 1994, Cramer attempted to produce a two-act play about their marriage entitled ''The Last Great Dish'' but failed to get it off the ground.
