''The Turtles of Venezuela'' is an identification guide of the Testudines families that are found in Venezuela, written by zoologist Pedro Trebbau and herpetologist Peter Pritchard. It was originally published in English in 1984, by the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles as the Number 2 of the series ''Contributions to herpetology''. In 2016 was published the Spanish version by ''Oscar Todtmann Editores'', with more than 130 pictures and illustrations, a presentation by Ph.D. Carlos Rivero Blanco and a prologue by Ph.D. Vivian Pérez. Pedro Trebbau
Pedro Trebbau (born Karl Peter Trebbau Millowitsch; 20 May 1929 – 16 January 2021) was a German-born Venezuelan zoologist. His career was characterized by the promotion and preservation of Venezuelan wildlife and nature. His research and collaboration with the herpetologist Peter Pritchard produced the still-extant reference book on The Turtles of Venezuela. Biography Trebbau was born in Cologne, where he very early on showed a keen interest in the natural world. He obtained a bachelor's degree in biology at the universities of Frankfurt and Freiburg, as well as a veterinary degree from the University of Giessen. He arrived in Venezuela in 1953 and enrolled at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), based in Maracay, Aragua. Testudines
Turtles are an order (biology), order of reptiles known as Testudines, characterized by a special turtle shell, shell developed mainly from their ribs. Modern turtles are divided into two major groups, the Pleurodira (side necked turtles) and Cryptodira (hidden necked turtles), which differ in the way the head retracts. There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles, including land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins. The fauna of Venezuela consists of a huge variety of animals. Venezuela's diverse wildlife includes manatees, Amazon river dolphins, and Orinoco crocodiles, which have been reported to reach up to in length. Some 23% of reptilian and 50% of amphibian species that inhabit the country are endemic to Venezuela. Overall, around 8,000 species (the world's 5th highest total) are endemic to the country.
