''The Triumph of Love'' is a 1922 Australian silent film directed by P. J. Ramster. It is a South Seas romance starring Jack Chalmers, a Sydney lifesaver who was famous at the time for trying to save a swimmer from a shark. It is considered to be a lost film. Plot Four men and a young woman (Coo-ee Knight) are shipwrecked on an island in the South Seas. The men fight over the woman. Production The film was shot in April 1922, with interiors filmed the Palmerston studio in Waverley, and some location work in Queensland. The female lead Coo-Ee Knight was from Hobart. Jack Chalmers
John Chalmers, GC (11 March 1894 – 29 March 1982) was a New Zealand-born Australian exchange recipient of the George Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry awarded to civilians or to military personnel for actions "not in the face of the enemy" in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. A member of the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, Chalmers was awarded the Albert Medal in 1922 for his actions in rescuing a swimmer during a shark attack at Coogee Beach. With the establishment of the George Cross, the Albert Medal was discontinued and, in 1971, living recipients of the decoration were invited to exchange their medal for the George Cross; Chalmers took up the offer and formally became a recipient of the George Cross. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
