The Traitor (1718 Play)
''The Traitor'' (often spelt as ''The Traytor'') is a tragedy published anonymously in 1718 and commonly attributed to the British writer and actor Christopher Bullock. It is a revised version of the 1631 play of the same title by James Shirley. It was Bullock's only effort to write tragedy, as his other works were all farces. Christopher Bullock (actor)
Christopher Bullock (1690–1722) was a British stage actor and dramatist. Bullock was the son of the actor William Bullock, and during his early years on the stage was often billed as Young Bullock to distinguish him from his father. He likely made his stage debut in a performance of ''The Recruiting Officer'' at the Queen's Theatre in Haymarket, London in 1707. Over the following decade and a half he also appeared frequently at Drury Lane and the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre, and was considered a potential natural successor to Colley Cibber in fop roles. In 1717 he and Theophilus Keene took over the management of Lincoln's Inn from John Rich for a period. Bullock married the actress Jane Rogers in 1717, with whom he had three children. Between 1715 and 1718 he also authored severals plays, mainly farces, beginning with an afterpiece '' The Slip''. William Bullock (actor)
William Bullock (''c.'' 1657 – ''c.'' 1740) was an English actor, "of great glee and much comic vivacity." He played at all the London theatres of his time, and in the summer at a booth at Bartholomew Fair. Life Bullock's name is mentioned in Downes's "Roscius Anglicanus." He first appears in the cast of Colley Cibber's "Love's Last Shift," produced by the associated companies of Drury Lane and Dorset Garden, 1696. In Cibber's piece he played Sly. He had joined the companies the previous year. Among his original characters were Sir Tunbelly Clumsy in the "Relapse," 1697, and Soto in ''She Would and She Would Not'' 1702. He also played with success many parts in the plays of John Dryden, William Wycherley, Thomas Shadwell. Until 1706, he was at Drury Lane. He then went to the Haymarket, returning to Drury Lane in 1708. Mary Kent
Mary Kent (before 1692 – after 1718) was an English actress, whose career lasted from 1692 to 1718, and the wife of Drury Lane actor Thomas Kent. Her dates of birth and death are not known. Mary Kent appeared in many playbills from 1692 onwards in London, playing minor parts in the United Company until the company's tumultuous breakup in 1695. She and her husband remained with the depleted parent troupe when the senior actors walked out to set up their own cooperative company, and during the consequent brief actor shortage at Drury Lane, she played more important parts, notably Flareit in Colley Cibber's ''Love's Last Shift'' and young Tom Fashion (as a breeches role) in John Vanbrugh's ''The Relapse'' in 1697. Anna Maria Seymour
Anna Maria Seymour or Mrs Seymour (c. 1692 – 10 July 1723) was a British actress. Life Seymour is first heard of in 1717 when she appeared at Drury Lane in ''The Scowrers''. She took leading roles in Richard III and Hamlet with Lacy Ryan as well as appearing with James Quin in ''Othello'' and with him as Lady Macbeth. In 1718-19 she moved to John Rich's theatre at Lincoln's Inn Fields to take leading roles. Her most noted role was as ''Marianne'' in Elijah Fenton's play of the same name. Jane Rogers (actress, Died 1739)
Jane Rogers (died 1739) was a British stage actress. She was the illegitimate daughter of the actor Robert Wilks and Jane Rogers an actress. To distinguish her from her mother she was sometimes known as Jane Rogers the Younger. In 1717 she married Christopher Bullock, an actor-manager at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre. He died in 1722 from consumption, after they had three children together. She continued to be a popular actress at Lincoln's Inn, and in 1732 moved with the rest of the company to the new Covent Garden Theatre. In 1736 as her career drew to a close she received a benefit performance at Covent Garden, and the following year another benefit was held at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. John Ogden (actor)
John Ogden (died 1732) was a British stage actor of the eighteenth century. He spent his entire stage career with John Rich's company at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre which he joined in 1715. He was adept at playing both comedy and tragedy. During his time on the stage he had several runs in with the law and was arrested and sent to Newgate Prison for speaking "treasonable words". Presumably an opponent of the Hanoverian Succession, he was charged in January 1723 with resisting arrest, drawing his sword and threatening anybody who didn't support the Jacobite pretender James III. Thomas Smith (actor)
Thomas Smith (died 1766) was a British stage actor of the eighteenth century. He first joined the Drury Lane company in the late seventeenth century. He spent time at the Queen's Theatre in Haymarket and in 1715 joined John Rich's company at Lincoln's Inn Fields. He remained with the company, although acting elsewhere such as Dublin's Smock Alley Theatre, until 1728. There another Smith, named Charles, at the company in his latter years and their roles are sometimes confused. After leaving Lincoln's Inn, Thomas Smith moved to the Haymarket Theatre and then to Goodman's Fields where he acted in Henry Giffard's company until 1733. Lisle's Tennis Court was a building off Portugal Street in Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. Originally built as a real tennis court, it was used as a playhouse during two periods, 1661–1674 and 1695–1705. During the early period, the theatre was called Lincoln's Inn Fields Playhouse, also known as The Duke's Playhouse, The New Theatre or The Opera. The building was demolished and replaced by a purpose-built theatre for a third period, 1714–1728.
