''The Toxic Avenger'' is a multimedia low-budget superhero film, superhero comedy splatter film franchise originating with the 1984 film ''The Toxic Avenger (1984 film), The Toxic Avenger'', and continuing through three film sequels, a The Toxic Avenger (musical), stage musical production, a comic book series from Marvel Comics, a video game and a children's TV cartoon. ''The Toxic Avenger'' is a 2008 rock musical based on the 1984 film of the same name. The book of the musical was written by Joe DiPietro, its music by David Bryan, and both wrote the lyrics. It is a comical take on a number of themes, including superhero stories, pollution, disability, politics, and the idea that New Jersey is inferior to other places. Since its first showing in 2008, it has been performed around the world through at least 2017. Productions The musical was first produced under the direction of John Rando at George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey and opened after previews officially on October 10, 2008. The title role of Melvin Ferd the Third/The Toxic Avenger went to Nick Cordero. Audra Blaser played Sarah, and Nancy Opel played Mayor Babs Belgoody and Ma Ferd. Simon Delacroix (born 18 April 1982), better known by his stage name the Toxic Avenger, is a French DJ, songwriter, and record producer. His first success was "Super Heroes" that resulted in a contract with Iheartcomix record label. He is known for his album ''Angst'' released on Roy Music label on 16 May 2011. He also released the music video directed by Wahib for the title track "Angst". He also released a number of EPs, and has had various collaborations with a number of artists including Canadian act Chromeo, Robert Bruce of the UK act South Central in "Never Stop" featuring Bruce and music video directed by Antoine Wagner. He also collaborated with French rapper Orelsan, particularly in his 2010 EP ''N'importe comment''. He performed under a mask up until his 2009 EP ''Toxic Is Dead'', in 2009, symbolizing the death of the personality he'd donned in the group Ed Wood Is Dead. ''Toxic Crusaders'' is a 1991 animated series aimed at children, loosely based on '' The Toxic Avenger'' films. It features Toxie, the lead character of the films, leading a group of misfit superheroes who combat pollution. This followed a trend of environmentally considerate cartoons and comics of the time, including ''Captain Planet and the Planeteers'', ''Swamp Thing'', and the ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures'', as well as cartoons based on R-rated properties like ''RoboCop'' and ''Police Academy''. As this incarnation was aimed at children, ''Toxic Crusaders'' is considerably tamer than the edgy films it was based on (although it nevertheless contained many adult-oriented jokes that would go over most children's heads).
