The Substance
''The Substance'' is a 2024 body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, and starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. The film premiered on 19 May 2024 at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, 77th Cannes Film Festival, and was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in its main competition section, where Fargeat won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay, Best Screenplay award. Synopsis Elisabeth Sparkle, star of an aerobics show, is fired on her 50th birthday by her boss because of her age. Coralie Fargeat
Coralie Fargeat (born 1976) is a French film director and screenwriter. She is best known for her 2017 debut feature film ''Revenge'', for which she received awards from independent film festivals across the world. Fargeat lists David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, David Lynch, and Michael Haneke as filmmakers who have influenced her, as well as crediting several South Korean filmmakers as stylistic inspiration. Early life Fargeat was born and raised in Paris. She decided to be a filmmaker when she was 16 or 17 years old. Fargeat studied at the Paris Institute of Political Studies before beginning work on film sets. She later attended La Fémis, a prestigious cinema school in Paris. ''Possession'' is a 1981 psychological drama and horror film directed by Andrzej Żuławski and written by Żuławski and Frederic Tuten. The plot obliquely follows the relationship between an international spy (Sam Neill) and his wife (Isabelle Adjani), who begins exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking for a divorce. ''Possession'', an international co-production between France and West Germany, was filmed in West Berlin in 1980. Żuławski's only English-language film, it premiered at the 34th Cannes Film Festival, where Adjani won the Best Actress award for her performance.
