The Socialist (Irish Newspaper)
''The Socialist'' is the official newspaper of the Socialist Party in Ireland. Published once a month, it is also available online. The newspaper first appeared intermittently in the early 1990s following the expulsion of members of Militant tendency from the Labour Party. The grouping became known as Militant Labour and later, the Socialist Party. The paper describes itself as ''providing a unique socialist analysis of political events''. It frequently covers workers rights, human rights trade union issues along with international affairs and political commentary. The Socialist Party is a political party in Ireland, active in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Internationally, it is affiliated to the Trotskyist International Socialist Alternative. The party has been involved in various populist campaigns including the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign and the Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes. Members of the party were jailed for their part in the former, while members have been arrested for their role in the latter. It had a seat in the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014. In 2015, the party received state funding of €132,000. From 2014, the party's election candidates in the Republic did not stand for election directly on the Socialist Party platform, but have instead run as candidates of the Anti-Austerity Alliance (AAA), now Solidarity, which was a registered party in its own right between 2014 and 2015 and which continues to contest elections as part of People Before Profit/Solidarity (PBP/S). Militant Tendency
The Militant tendency, or Militant, was a Trotskyism, Trotskyist group in the British Labour Party (UK), Labour Party, organised around the ''Militant'' newspaper, which launched in 1964. According to Michael Crick, its politics were based on the thoughts of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky and "virtually nobody else". In 1975, there was widespread press coverage of a Labour Party report on the infiltration tactics of Militant. The Labour Party ( ga, Páirtí an Lucht Oibre, literally "Party of the Working People") is a centre-left and social-democratic political party in the Republic of Ireland. Founded on 28 May 1912 in Clonmel, County Tipperary, by James Connolly, James Larkin, and William O'Brien (trade unionist), William O'Brien as the political wing of the Irish Trades Union Congress, it describes itself as a "democratic socialist party" in its constitution. The Starry Plough (newspaper)
''The Starry Plough'' () () is the official newsletter (Initally a newspaper, then a magazine) of the Irish Republican Socialist Party. In 2006 it proclaimed on its website that "The Starry Plough is the only paper that stands firmly against British rule and for the destruction of capitalism in Ireland." The paper also focuses on socialist solidarity issues around the world. History The name of the paper is taken from the flag of the same name. The decision to use the name ''the Starry Plough'' was inspired by a newspaper produced by Official Sinn Féin in Derry City in the early 1970s. Produced by the local branch of Official Sinn Féin in Derry, it was edited by Jackie Ward (who went on to edit ''The United Irishman'') and Joe Sweeney (who sided with the IRSP following the split with the Officials).
