''The Sinful Nuns of Saint Valentine'' ( it, Le scomunicate di San Valentino/ translation: ''The Excommunication of St. Valentine'') is a 1974 Italian nunsploitation film written and directed by Sergio Grieco and starring Françoise Prévost and Jenny Tamburi. Plot In the sixteenth century, two Spanish lovers are divided by the rivalry of their families. She then confines herself in a convent, and while the man searches for her, the abbess of the convent falls in love with him, hindering his research and carrying the girl to the Inquisition. Sergio Grieco
Sergio Grieco (13 January 1917 – 30 March 1982) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. Biography Sergio's father was the Italian Communist Ruggero Grieco. Grieco first started in film in the Soviet Union in 1931, working as an assistant to Nikolai Ekk on the first Soviet sound film '' Road to Life''. He began his Italian film career as a script supervisor in 1939, working his way up to an assistant director the following year. In 1949 he worked as an assistant to René Clément on his film ''The Walls of Malapaga'' (1949). His directorial debut was ''Il sentiero dell'odio'' (1950), beginning a prolific career in a variety of genres. Corrado Gaipa (13 March 1925 – 21 September 1989) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Gaipa was a well known actor of Italian cinema as well as dubbing voices. However, he was widely known for his role as Don Tommasino in ''The Godfather''. Biography Born in Palermo, Gaipa enrolled in the Silvio d’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he studied for three years and performed an adaptation of the play '' You Can't Take It with You''. He then graduated in 1946. In 1948, Gaipa joined a theatre group based in Rome and he began doing radio dramas which were broadcast in many cities across Italy such as Turin, Florence and Milan. He also appeared in many films such as the 1969 film ''That Splendid November''. Nunsploitation is a subgenre of exploitation film which had its peak in Europe in the 1970s. These films typically involve Christian nuns living in convents during the Middle Ages. Criteria The main conflict of the story is usually of a religious or sexual nature, such as religious oppression or sexual suppression due to living in celibacy. The Inquisition is another common theme. These films, although often seen as pure exploitation films, often contain criticism against religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. Indeed, some protagonist dialogue voiced feminist consciousness and rejection of their subordinated social role. Françoise Prévost (actress)
Françoise Prévost (13 January 1930 – 30 November 1997) was a French actress, journalist and author. She was the daughter of writer Marcelle Auclair. She appeared in more than 70 films between 1949 and 1985. Life and career Prévost was born and died in Paris, France. She made her film debut at 18, in '' Jean de la Lune''. After several minor roles she emerged with the Nouvelle Vague, with roles of weight in films by Pierre Kast, Jean-Gabriel Albicocco and Jacques Rivette.
