The Silver Lining (1921 Film)
''The Silver Lining'' is a 1921 American silent drama film directed by Roland West. It is not known whether the film currently survives. Plot While discussing heredity, a man recalls the story of two orphan girls to a pair of cohorts at a ball. Angel (Carmen) is adopted by crooks who teach her to steal, while Evelyn (Valli) is the criminally inclined girl adopted by a wealthy family. When Angel steals a watch from a passenger on the train, the man refuses to press charges and enlists her help in his confidence scheme in Havana. Evelyn is engaged to marry the promising author Robert Ellington (Austin), but after a quarrel, the writer goes to Havana and meets and falls for Angel. Ellington is scheduled to leave on a ship but gives his ticket to Johnson (Albertson), the secret agent and con man. Roland West
Roland (; frk, *Hrōþiland; lat-med, Hruodlandus or ''Rotholandus''; it, Orlando or ''Rolando''; died 15 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. The historical Roland was military governor of the Breton March, responsible for defending Francia's frontier against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's ''Vita Karoli Magni'', which notes he was part of the Frankish rearguard killed in retribution by the Basques in Iberia at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. The story of Roland's death at Roncevaux Pass was embellished in later medieval and Renaissance literature. The first and most famous of these epic treatments was the Old French ''Chanson de Roland'' of the 11th century. Arthur Donaldson (actor)
Arthur Donaldson (5 April 186928 September 1955), was a Swedish-American actor and opera singer. He appeared in 71 films between 1910 and 1934. Biography Donaldson was born in Norsholm, Sweden. His father was a sea captain, and his mother was an actress. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Stockholm. He moved to the United States at the age of fourteen and quickly became a prolific actor on stage. He made his film debut in 1910. Donaldson debuted on stage when he was 7 years old, performing in ''Uncle Brown's Leather Couch'' at the Stora Theatre in Norr Koping, Swededn. He first performed on stage in the United States in 1890 as part of a Swedish company. Donaldson moved from theatrical productions to singing, first with the Duff Opera Company and then performing in a concert tour with Emma Cecilia Thursby. Henry Sedley (actor)
Henry McDonald Sedley (1881–1962) was an American actor. He caused the death of a fellow student while a freshman at Yale University in 1901, which may have been the reason for a young woman being banned by her grandmother from marrying him. Prior to achieving fame in silent film, he owned several racehorses and was a champion jockey. Born in New York in 1881, he attended St. Paul's school, Andover, and the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, though he did not complete a degree at Yale. He bought a 70 foot racing yacht from Alfred G. Vanderbilt, and was described as a bon vivant. When a freshman at Yale in 1901, he caused the death of a classmate, Edward F. Corrigan. He was expelled from Yale in the aftermath. In 1907 he reached a settlement for $300. About the same time, Oliver Barnes, a wealthy friend from Reno, Nevada, took Sedley under his wing and assisted his transition into the film industry. Gladden James (February 26, 1888 – August 28, 1948) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 180 films between 1911 and 1946. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio and died in Hollywood, California, from leukemia. Family In 1914 he married Julia Nagl, a 1911 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Nebraska and later a Broadway actress who he appeared with in Officer 666, in Texas while on a picture taking assignment with the US government. Julia Swayne Gordon
Julia Swayne Gordon (born Sarah Victoria Smith; October 29, 1878 – May 28, 1933) was an American actress who appeared in at least 228 films between 1908 and 1933. Early years Gordon was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Louis and Anna Smith and was educated there. She went to Denver to study dramatics under Jessie Bonstelle. Career Gordon moved to New York and acted in stock theater, after which, she performed with Henrietta Crosman and James A. Herne. Gordon's work in film began in 1905 with the Edison Company, and in 1908 she moved to Vitagraph Studios. In 1911 she starred in Vitagraph's screen portrayal of the Lady Godiva legend. Perhaps her most memorable performance, however, is as Richard Arlen's mother in the World War I silent film ''Wings'' (1927), which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture. Dorothy Dickson
Dorothy Dickson (July 25, 1893 – September 25, 1995) was an American-born, London-based theater actress and singer, and a centenarian. Biography and Career Dickson is known mostly for her rendition of the Jerome Kern song "Look for the Silver Lining". She was also a member of the Ziegfeld Follies and made many appearances in New York and abroad. In 1922, she starred in ''The Cabaret Girl''. In 1936, she co-starred with Ivor Novello in his ''Careless Rapture'' and, in 1937, in his '' Crest of the Wave''. Dickson starred in a few silent films, including ''Eastward Ho!'' (1919) and ''Paying the Piper'' (1921). During her early days on the London stage, Dickson was introduced to another future celebrity (as well as centenarian), Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later the Queen Mother.
