The Sign Of The Cactus
''The Sign of the Cactus'' is a 1925 American silent Western film directed by Clifford Smith and starring Jack Hoxie, Helen Holmes, and J. Gordon Russell. Plot As described in a review in a film magazine, settler Old Man Hayes (Swickard) resists the attempt of the water company to secure his property and is killed. Years later, a mysterious champion known as Whitehorse Champion arises and helps the settlers in their fight to keep their cattle from dying of thirst. He is called that because of the color of his mount and because he leaves a bit of cactus as a sign of his visit. Lawyer John Henderton (Russell) is the representative of the water interests and his daughter Belle (Holmes), while riding through the woods, sees her horse run off to be with its mate, the horse of Whitehouse Cactus (Hoxie), who is really Hayes' son Jack (Hoxie). Clifford Smith (director)
Clifford Smith (1894–1937) was an American film director who also occasionally film actor, acted and film producer, produced. He directed over eighty films between 1915 and 1937 as well as several serial film, serials, doing much of his work for Universal Pictures. Primarily a director of western film, westerns he worked with leading genre stars such as William S. Hart. Robert Gordon (director)
Robert Gordon (August 21, 1913 in Pittsburgh – December 1, 1990 in Los Angeles) was an American director and actor. His acting career, in which he was usually credited as Bobby Gordon, began in 1923 while he was a child, and continued through 1939. His first directing credit came with the 1947 film '' Blind Spot'', after which he directed several films, including ''The Joe Louis Story'' in 1953, ''It Came from Beneath the Sea'' in 1955, '' Black Zoo'' in 1963; and television series episodes including ''My Friend Flicka'', ''Zane Grey Theater'', '' The Texan'' and ''The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis''. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Jack Pratt, born John Harold Pratt, (1878–1938) was a Canadian film director and actor. He directed several films and acted in dozens more. As a director, his work included screen adaptations of novels. Known as Smiling Jack, he married actress Betty Brice.
