"The Showing Up of Corporal Jones" is the fifth episode of the first series of the British comedy series ''Dad's Army''. It was originally transmitted on Wednesday 4 September 1968. Synopsis When Major Regan from GHQ inspects the platoon he decides that Jones must resign, as he is too old. But he also says that if Jones can complete an assault course in 15 minutes he can stay. The platoon organise an elaborate plan to keep Jones amongst them. Private Godfrey
Private Charles Godfrey MM is a fictional Home Guard platoon member, first portrayed by Arnold Ridley in the BBC television sitcom ''Dad's Army''. and in the 1971 ''Dad's Army'' film. He is retired and was previously a tailor for the Civil Service Stores or the Army & Navy Stores. Godfrey was a conscientious objector during the First World War, yet he did work as a stretcher bearer with the Royal Army Medical Corps and earned a Military Medal for taking the wounded off the battle field at the Battle of the Somme. This has earned him great respect among the platoon members and resulted in him being appointed as the First Aid supervisor. Ridley himself fought at the Battle of the Somme during the First World War. Personality Godfrey was born in 1871, and is a gentle, mild-mannered and kindly old gentleman, though more complex than at first evident. He is the only member of the platoon who has retired. "The Lion Has 'Phones" is the third episode of the third series of the British comedy series ''Dad's Army''. It was originally transmitted on 25 September 1969. Synopsis Captain Mainwaring teaches the platoon how to use a public telephone box for emergency communication. Plot After a successful exercise in camouflage, Mainwaring delivers a lecture on communications. Apparently, the four main targets are the gasometer, the railway bridge, the telephone exchange and the reservoir. They are vital to the town's survival, so two men will be posted at each location. If they see anything suspicious, they will phone Mainwaring via the nearest telephone box. Thérèse Ellen McMurray (born 6 July 1947) is an Irish-British television actor. Biography McMurray comes from a variety theatre background as both her parents, grandparents and aunts were renowned variety artistes represented by the agents Lew Grade, Baron Grade, Lew and Leslie Grade. Lew Grade introduced her parents to each other and he and his wife, the singer Kathleen Moody, became McMurray's godparents. She became Lord Grade's protégé. Edward Sinclair
Edward Sinclair Perry (3 February 1914 – 29 August 1977) was an English actor who played the role of verger Maurice Yeatman in ''Dad's Army''. He also made appearances in ''Z-Cars'' and ''Danger Man''. The earliest work in his belated main career was in radio before being noticed and offered small parts on television. His first appearance in ''Dad's Army'' was in the fifth episode (before audiences had been introduced to the Vicar) as the caretaker, playing the verger from the second series. He also appeared in several films and theatre productions, and was being offered work in panto just as the series finished, but died soon after from a heart attack while on holiday in Cheddar, Somerset. This came as a shock to the cast, and it was Arthur Lowe who stated at his funeral service, "With the loss of Teddy, it is now quite clear that there will be no more ''Dad's Army''." Patrick Waddington
Patrick William Simpson Waddington (19 August 19014 February 1987) was an English actor, educated at Gresham's School at Holt in Norfolk. He was born and died in York, England. Biography Waddington was the grandson of William Waddington, the piano manufacturer who also took over the management of the Theatre Royal York. After Gresham's School and St John's College, Oxford, he started his career singing, and in the 1930s was in ''That Certain Trio'' with Peggy Cochrane. Janet Kathleen Davies (14 September 1927 – 22 September 1986) was an English actress best known for her recurring role as Mrs. Pike in the long-running sitcom ''Dad's Army''.
