''The Shadow of Empress Wu'', also known as ''Riyue Lingkong'', is a Chinese television series about the relationship between Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history, and Xie Yaohuan, a fictional female official serving in Wu's court. The series was directed by Lu Qi and starred Liu Xiaoqing, Eva Huang, Vincent Jiao, Ma Xiaowei and Yang Zi in the leading roles. It was first broadcast on CCTV from August 2007 to January 2008 in mainland China, and in November 2008 on HD Jade in Hong Kong. Liu Xiaoqing
Liu Xiaoqing (born 30 October 1955) is a Chinese actress and businesswoman. She was one of the leading actresses in China in the 1980s. Biography In her early days Liu worked as a farm labourer, then as a propagandist for the People's Liberation Army and later a stage actor for the Chengdu Military Drama Group. Liu acted in mainland Chinese films before she turned 30—''The Great Wall of the South China Sea'' (1976), ''What a Family'' (1979) and ''The Little Flower'' (1980). Xue Huaiyi
Huaiyi (懷義; died December 25, 694), né Feng Xiaobao (), also referred to as Xue Huaiyi (), was a Buddhist monk who was known for being the lover of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in the history of China. Background Huaiyi, whose birth name was Feng Xiaobao, was from Hu County (鄠縣, in modern Xi'an, Shaanxi). He was making a living by selling medicines on the streets of Tang Dynasty's eastern capital Luoyang, when he was spotted by Princess Qianjin, a daughter of Tang's founder Emperor Gaozu, and in or before 685, she recommended him to Empress Dowager Wu (later known as Wu Zetian), then regent over her son Emperor Ruizong. Empress Dowager Wu favored him greatly, and in order to facilitate his being able to come in and out of the palace, had him undertake tonsure to become a Buddhist monk with the name Huaiyi. Zhou Xing (Tang Dynasty)
Zhou Xing (; died 691?) was a Chinese politician who was a secret police official of the Tang dynasty and the Wu Zhou dynasty. He was largely responsible for carrying out her actions to wipe out senior members of Tang's Li imperial clan, but, in a turnabout, was in 691 himself accused of crimes and, under threats of a torture technique himself developed, confessed. Wu Zetian spared his life and exiled him, but he was killed by his enemies on the way to exile. Background It is not known when Zhou Xing was born, but it is known that he was from Chang'an County (), one of the two counties making up the Tang Dynasty capital Chang'an.
