Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Marsalis Music is a jazz record label founded by Branford Marsalis in 2002. After 20 years with Columbia, saxophonist Branford Marsalis left to start his own label. Early musicians to the label included Miguel Zenón, a Puerto Rican saxophonist, Doug Wamble, a guitarist from Tennessee, and Harry Connick Jr., who, like the Marsalis family, is from New Orleans. The catalogue includes ''The Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration'', and ''Music Redeems'', the only recorded performances of the father and sons together (father Ellis with sons Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason). ''Upward Spiral'' is an album by the Branford Marsalis Quartet with vocalist Kurt Elling. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Recording and music The album was recorded at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, New Orleans, on December 16–19, 2015. The leader of the quartet, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, had not previously recorded an entire album with one vocalist. The other members were pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner. Eric Revis
Eric Revis (born May 31, 1967) is a jazz bassist and composer. Revis came to prominence as a bassist with singer Betty Carter in the mid-1990s. Since 1997 he has been a member of Branford Marsalis's ensemble. His debut album, ''Tales of the Stuttering Mime'', was released in 2004 on his own 11:11 Records. Revis studied under Ellis Marsalis at the University of New Orleans and at St. Mary's University, Texas. He directed the Jazz Ensemble at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas in 2007 and 2008. Joey Calderazzo
Joseph Dominick Calderazzo (February 27, 1965) is a jazz pianist and brother of musician Gene Calderazzo. He played extensively in bands led by Michael Brecker and Branford Marsalis, and has also led his own bands. Early life Calderazzo was born in New Rochelle, New York. He began studying classical piano at age eight. His brother, Gene, got him interested in jazz. He studied with Richard Beirach and in the 1980s continued his studies at Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. At the same time, he was playing professionally with David Liebman and Frank Foster. Later life and career At a music clinic he met saxophonist Michael Brecker and became part of his quintet beginning in 1987. In 1990, he signed with Blue Note Records. Keith Jarrett (born May 8, 1945) is an American jazz and classical music pianist and composer. Jarrett started his career with Art Blakey and later moved on to play with Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis.
