The Russell Affair
''The Russell Affair'' is a 1928 Australian silent film directed by P. J. Ramster. It was Ramster's last film. Synopsis An artist, Stephen Patrick, falls in love with his model, Juliette (Adrienne Stewart). Juliette is in love with Dr Lonsdale, who is engaged to a wealthy widow, Ruby Russell (Jessica Harcourt). Ruby destroys Patrick's paintings of Juliette in a jealous rage, but manages to get Juliette blamed. A blackmailer, Arthur White (Gaston Mervale), complicates things. Production The movie was financed partly by Juliette De La Ruze, a woman anxious to get involved in film production. Filming took place in Sydney, partly at the studios of Australasian Films, Hyde Park and "in the homes of prominent society people and wound up in August 1928. Jessica Harcourt (1905–1988) was an Australian mannequin, authoress and actress, best known for playing a leading role in ''For the Term of His Natural Life'' (1927). A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." ''The Adorable Outcast'' is a 1928 Australian silent film directed by Norman Dawn about an adventurer who romances an island girl. The script was based on Beatrice Grimshaw's novel ''Conn of the Coral Seas''. It was one of the most expensive films made in Australia until that time, and was Dawn's follow up to ''For the Term of His Natural Life'' (1927). It did not perform as well at the box office and helped cause Australasian Films to abandon feature film production. ''For the Term of His Natural Life'' is a 1927 Australian film based on the 1874 novel by Marcus Clarke, directed, produced and co-written by Norman Dawn. It was the most expensive Australian silent film ever made and remains one of the most famous Australian films of the silent era. Plot After an argument, Ellinor Devine reveals to her husband, Sir Richard, that he is not actually the father of their son, also named Richard, but that he was fathered by her cousin, Lord Bellasis. Sir Richard throws his son out and storms off in a rage. Shortly afterwards, Richard Junior finds his biological father dead in the forest. Only the viewer and an unidentified witness know that Lord Bellasis has actually been killed by his own son, known as John Rex.
