The Root Of All Evil (1947 Film)
''The Root of All Evil'' is a 1947 British drama film, directed by Brock Williams for Gainsborough Pictures and starring Phyllis Calvert and Michael Rennie. The film was the first directorial assignment for Williams, who was better known as a screenwriter, and also produced the screenplay based on the 1921 novel by J. S. Fletcher. It was one of the less successful Gainsborough melodramas. Plot Jeckie Farnish (Calvert) has grown up in a grindingly poor household, and as she reaches adulthood falls in love with a local grocers son. She is loved by her childhood playmate Joe Bartle (John McCallum), but takes him for granted and feels that he lacks the spark or ambition to match her determination to make something of herself. Brock Williams (screenwriter)
Brock Williams (8 July 1894 – 19 February 1964) was a prolific English screenwriter with over 100 films to his credit between 1930 and 1962. He also had a brief directorial career, and later also worked in television. Two of his novels ''The Earl of Chicago (novel), The Earl of Chicago'' and ''Uncle Willie and the Bicycle Shop'' were both adapted into films. Career A native of Cornwall, in 1930 Williams joined Teddington Studios, the British arm of Warner Bros., Warner Brothers, where he would spend the next 15 years. The 1930s was the golden age of the quota quickie, when Teddington was churning out quickly and cheaply shot films by the week, so work was plentiful. With few exceptions, these films were deemed of ephemeral value, with no worthwhile life after their first cinema run. George Carney
George Carney (21 November 1887 – 9 December 1947) was a British comedian and film actor. Born in Bristol, he worked in the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, in a furniture business, then in the Belfast shipyards. In 1906 he made his debut stage appearance in a pantomime in Nottingham, with his first London appearance following in 1907, as one half of a double act, Carney and Armstrong. They toured together in Britain, Australia and South Africa before Carney set up revues with another comedian, Sam Harris. From 1926, he worked on stage as a solo comedian, with such sketches as "The Fool of the Force", "The Stage Door Keeper", and "I Live in Leicester Square". He then took up a film career, appearing as a character actor in numerous British films, including ''Love on the Dole'' (1941) and '' Brighton Rock'' (1947). He died in London in 1947. Maurice Ostrer
Maurice Ostrer (1896–1975) was a British film executive. He was best known for overseeing the Gainsborough melodramas. He was head of production at Gainsborough Studios from 1943–46. He resigned from the studio in 1946 after a disagreement with J. Arthur Rank, who had taken over the studio. Ostrer left the film industry and went to work in textiles. According to writer Robert Murphy, "Maurice's subsequent disappearance from the film industry... makes it easy to dismiss him as a dilettante whose success owed more to luck than judgement.
