''The Rescuers'' is a 1977 American animated adventure comedy-drama film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. The 23rd Disney animated feature film, its story follows Bernard and Bianca, two members of the Rescue Aid Society, an international mouse organization dedicated to helping abduction victims around the world. The two mice must free young orphan Penny from two treasure hunters, who intend to use her to help them obtain a giant diamond. The film is based on a series of books by Margery Sharp, most notably ''The Rescuers'' (1959) and ''Miss Bianca'' (1962). ''The Rescuers'' entered development in 1962, but was shelved due to Walt Disney's dislike of the project's political overtones. ''The Rescuers'' is a British children's novel written by Margery Sharp and illustrated by Garth Williams; its first edition was published in 1959 by Collins in the United Kingdom and Little, Brown in the United States. The novel is the first in a series of stories about Miss Bianca, a socialite mouse who volunteered to lend assistance to people and animals in danger. Plot The story begins in an unnamed, supposedly "barely civilized" country , during a meeting of the Prisoners’ Aid Society, an international organization of mice dedicated to brightening the lives of prisoners. When the chairwoman mouse informs delegates about the case of a Norwegian poet, imprisoned (presumably wrongfully) in the horrible Black Castle, she suggests changing the traditional rules of the organization to try to rescue him. ''The Rescuers Down Under'' is a 1990 American animated adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 29th Disney animated feature film and the second movie to be produced during the Disney Renaissance, it is the sequel to the 1977 film ''The Rescuers'', which was based on the novels by Margery Sharp. In ''The Rescuers Down Under'', Bernard and Bianca travel to the Australian Outback to save a boy named Cody from a villainous poacher who wants to capture an endangered bird of prey for money.
