The Pursuit Of The Smugglers
''The Pursuit of the Smugglers'' is a 1913 American short silent film drama. The film was directed by J. P. McGowan and stars Earle Foxe, James Vincent, Irene Boyle, and Stuart Holmes in the lead roles. It was produced and distributed by the Kalem Company. Plot James Peyton, a young Internal Revenue Officer of unusual resource, is sent to investigate the operations of a band of daring liquor smugglers and bring about their apprehension. In order that he may not arouse suspicion, Peyton secures employment at a village store, and while engaged in his duties as clerk he gains the friendship of Marcella, the storekeeper's daughter. But in forming the acquaintance, Peyton makes an enemy in Poole, a rough character, who has been endeavoring to win Marcella's hand. Poole is the leader of the smugglers and his association soon becomes known to the vigilant officer. Earle Foxe
Earle Foxe (born Earl Aldrich Fox; December 25, 1891 – December 10, 1973) was an American actor. Early years Foxe was born in Oxford, Ohio, to Charles Aldrich Fox, originally of Flint, Michigan, and Eva May Herron. He was educated at Ohio State University, where he participated in theatrical productions. Career Foxe left for New York City as a young man and became a stage actor, working for two years as the Garrick Stock Company's leading man. He performed on stage with Douglas Fairbanks before going into films. On Broadway, he performed in ''Dancing Around'' (1915), ''Come Seven'' (1920), and ''Princess Virtue'' (1921). He appeared in some films in New York City and lived at the Lambs Club in the early 1920s at 130 West 44th Street in New York City but moved to California in 1922 and signed a contract with Fox Film Corporation. Kalem Company Films
The Kalem Company was an early American film studio founded in New York City in 1907. It was one of the first companies to make films abroad and to set up winter production facilities, first in Florida and then in California. Kalem was sold to Vitagraph Studios in 1917. Formation and history The Kalem Company was founded by George Kleine, Samuel Long, and Frank J. Marion. The company was named for their initials K, L, and M. Kalem immediately joined other studios in the Motion Picture Patents Company that held a monopoly on production and distribution. Frank Marion had been the sales manager at Biograph Studios and Samuel Long was the manager of the Biograph production facility at Hoboken, New Jersey. Stuart Holmes (born Joseph Liebchen; March 10, 1884 – December 29, 1971) was an American actor and sculptor whose career spanned seven decades. He appeared in almost 450 films between 1909 and 1964, sometimes credited as Stewart Holmes. Biography Holmes was born Joseph Liebchen on March 10, 1884, in Chicago, Illinois, where he was educated. For 20 years, Holmes performed in vaudeville and on stage, with the latter often being in Shakespeare's plays. His work in the theater included a stint in Germany. Holmes's film career began in 1911 and ended with ''The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'' (1962). As a sculptor Holmes created work for at least three California United States post offices — in Oceanside (1936), Claremont (1937), and Bell (1937). Holmes's wife, Blanca, was an actress; his son, Phillips Holmes, was an actor.
