''The Proposal'' is a 1957 Australian television play based on the play ''A Marriage Proposal'' by Anton Chekhov. It was made at a time when Australian drama production was rare and mostly adaptations of overseas shows. Plot In the 1880s a suitor tries to propose to an attractive girl under the eye of her father. The suitor keeps saying the wrong thing. Cast *Paul Bacon as the suitor *Douglas Kelly as the father *Bettine Kauffmann as the girl Production It was filmed in Melbourne using popular radio actors of the time. Chris Muir recalled the air-conditioning broke down in the studio and the actors came close to fainting. Christopher Muir
} Christopher Muir (1931 - 2022) was an Australian director and producer, notable for his work in TV in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s he was head of ABC Television drama. Biography Most of his early childhood was spent in France, but he returned to Melbourne upon the outbreak of World War II. He joined the ABC in 1949 at the recommendation of his headmaster upon completing his schooling at Melbourne Grammar School. Initially working as a messenger boy, he soon became a general trainee, and by 1954 he was a radio announcer. In 1955 the ABC seconded him to Paris to study television. He returned to Melbourne for the inauguration of ABC television in 1956. The ensuing decade saw him become a pioneer of television drama and music productions, often screened live-to-air during prime time on the ABC. ''A Marriage Proposal'' (sometimes translated as simply ''The Proposal'', russian: Предложение, translit=Predlozheniye, italic=yes) is a One-act play, one-act farce by Anton Chekhov, written in 1888–1889 and first performed in 1890. It is a fast-paced play of dialogue-based action and situational humour. A young man Lomov comes to propose his neighbour Natalya but they both keep on fighting on various topics. Through this play, Chekhov exposes the fakeness of the world and tries to show how superficial people are of these days. Rather than emotional bonding in relationships, people simply connect with wealth and money. In this story, Chobukov and Lomov know each other closely.
