''The Prophecy'' is the fourth album by American thrash metal band Defiance, released in 2009. Unlike the previous two albums, '' Void Terra Firma'' and '' Beyond Recognition'', the album is much more straight forward thrash metal, almost similar to '' Product of Society''. Reception The album had some pretty lukewarm reviews by both critics and metal fans alike. For example, about.com responded to this album with, Themetalcrypt.com said, "Yet another 'Thrash Revival' album that contains a shitload of groove and yelling but very little actual Thrash." The album also received favorable reviews for their efforts on what would ultimately be their last. Defiance (metal Band)
Defiance is an American thrash metal band from Oakland, California. They played a technical style of thrash originally evoking bands like Testament, though they would later move on to playing in their own unique, more progressive thrash style. After dissolving in 1995, they reformed in 2005 and released their fourth studio album ''The Prophecy'' in late 2009. They broke up once again in 2012, but announced yet another reunion in September 2019. Biography Early career (1985–1988) Defiance was formed in 1985 by guitarist Brad Bowers, drummer Matt Vander Ende, and bassist Mike Kaufmann. Doug Harrington joined later but left the band not long after due to conflicts with Bowers, and was replaced by Jim Adams. Eventually the band ousted Bowers and replaced him with Harrington. Candlelight Records is a British record label based in England and founded by former Extreme Noise Terror bassist Lee Barrett, though it has had a division in the United States since January 2001. Beyond Recognition
''Beyond Recognition'' is the third full-length album (and final until 2009's ''The Prophecy'') by American thrash metal band Defiance, released in 1992 on Roadrunner Records. It was a bit of a departure from the band's previous work. It can be best described as "progressive thrash metal", featuring more complex song structures, odd time signatures, numerous key and tempo changes, technical riffs and drumming, and even clean sections that often evoked jazz fusion. This newer, more distinctive style earned the band their biggest critical success to date, and many fans hail it as their finest work. Despite this, the album did not sell as well as their previous works due to a shifting musical landscape and as a result, poor advertisement for the album. It has been out of print for many years, though many thrash fans consider it to be a lost gem of the genre. ''Product of Society'' is the debut album by the American thrash metal band Defiance. It was released in 1989 on Roadracer Records. It was the only album by Defiance to feature Ken Elkington on vocals and had cover art by Ed Repka. The first album is much more straightforward tech thrash metal style comparing to their other albums, which would have a more progressive/complex sound until ''The Prophecy''. Re-released in 2008 by Metal Mind Productions from Poland as a new digipack edition on golden disc, digitally remastered using 24-Bit process and limited to 2000 numerated copies. Annihilator guitarist Jeff Waters produced the album. However, the band was very unsatisfied with his production, which sounds very thin and takes away from the thrash metal crunch that gives the music its tonal identity. Groove metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that began in the early 1990s. The genre achieved success in the 1990s and continued having success in the 2000s. Doug Harrington
Douglas McMackin Harrington (October 1, 1966 – November 14, 2006) was an American heavy metal guitarist. He was best known for being one of the lead guitarists for the thrash metal band Defiance throughout their entire recording career. Biography Harrington was born October 1, 1966, in Massachusetts, and moved in his early childhood to Oakland, California, where he was raised. He joined Defiance in 1984, left in 1985 and rejoined again the same year in a turn of events where he and his replacement Jim Adams ended up sharing the lead guitar position. Harrington was an integral member of Defiance as soon as he joined the band, composing the bulk of the band's music on all three of their albums, ''Product of Society'', ''Void Terra Firma'' and ''Beyond Recognition''.
