The Price Of Survival
''The Price Of Survival'' (''De prijs van overleven'') is a 2003 documentary film by Dutch director Louis van Gasteren and a sequel to '' Now Do You Get It Why I'm Crying?'' (''Begrijpt U Nu Waarom Ik Huil?''). The documentary is about the impact of post-traumatic stress syndrome on the family of a Nazi concentration camp survivor named Joop. Joop cannot forget his experiences in a concentration camp during World War II and these emotions are transferred to his wife Dina and their three children. The eldest son and daughter have long since lost contact with their parents and respond in the documentary only by letter. The youngest son Reinier, together with his wife Hadelinde, stayed in contact with his parents. Joop died in 2000, yet the camp experiences are seemingly 'inherited,' as Joop's descendants continue to pay the emotional price of his survival. Louis Alphonse van Gasteren (20 November 1922 – 10 May 2016) was a Dutch film director, film producer, and artist. He was born in Amsterdam. He is the son of actor Louis van Gasteren Sr. and singer Elise Menagé Challa, and the brother of actress Josephine van Gasteren. Biography Van Gasteren trained as an electrician. ''Now Do You Get It Why I'm Crying?'' (''Begrijpt U Nu Waarom Ik Huil?'') is a 1969 documentary film by Dutch director Louis van Gasteren. The film focuses mainly on the personality of Joop, a traumatised survivor of concentration camps. Background and content In the late 1960s, Van Gasteren was drawn to the work of the Leiden University professor Jan Bastiaans treating traumatized war survivors. Gasteren was concerned about the psychotherapeutic treatment with LSD on a former concentration camp prisoner in Bastiaans' clinic. The patient focused on was named Joop. Joop was arrested by the Nazis in September 1941 and underwent a long journey through hell among different camps until he was liberated by the Russians in 1945. Joop returned home to his wife a different man. He had nightmares, and was incapable of ordinary human contact. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental and behavioral disorder that can develop because of exposure to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, child abuse, domestic violence, or other threats on a person's life. A Dutch documentary film is a documentary film made by a director of (partly) Dutch origin. Dutch documentary films are not necessarily bound to Dutch topics or locations in the Netherlands.
