''The Portrait of a Lady'' is a 1996 British-American film directed by Jane Campion and adapted by Laura Jones from Henry James' 1881 novel of the same name. The film stars Nicole Kidman, Barbara Hershey, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Donovan, Shelley Duvall, Richard E. Dame Elizabeth Jane Campion (born 30 April 1954) is a New Zealand filmmaker. She is best known for writing and directing the critically acclaimed films ''The Piano'' (1993) and '' The Power of the Dog'' (2021), for which she has received a total of two Academy Awards (including Best Director for the latter), two BAFTA Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. John Gielgud
Sir Arthur John Gielgud, (; 14 April 1904 – 21 May 2000) was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. With Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier, he was one of the trinity of actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century. Janet Patterson (12 August 1956 – 21 October 2016) was an Australian costume designer and production designer. She won one BAFTA award and four Australian Film Institute awards, and was nominated for four Academy awards. Early life and education Patterson attended North Sydney Girls High and later attended East Sydney Technical College and Sydney College of the Arts, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design and a diploma in Textile Studies and Costume Design. In addition to her studies in Sydney, Patterson received a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust scholarship to study under architect Luigi Snozzi in Switzerland. The Academy Award for Best Costume Design is one of the Academy Awards presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for achievement in film costume design. The award was first given in 1949, for films made in 1948. Initially, separate award categories were established for black-and-white films and color films. Since the merger of the two categories in 1967, the academy has traditionally avoided giving out the award to films with a contemporary setting. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC, previously the British Board of Film Censors) is a non-governmental organisation founded by the British film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works (such as television programmes, trailers, adverts, public information/campaigning films, menus, bonus content, etc.) released on physical media within the United Kingdom.
