''The Painted Word'' is the fourth studio album by English post-punk band Television Personalities. It was released in 1984 by record label Illuminated. Reception ''The Painted Word'' has been generally well received by critics. Jack Barron of ''Sounds'' wrote "Some people think this is the best group in Britain. But that's a pointless debate to engage in when you can listen to such a well-crafted record." Ira Robbins of Trouser Press called the album "surprisingly serious and altogether excellent." A negative review came from Cath Carroll of ''NME'', writing "This opus even made the cat cringe." The Television Personalities are an English post-punk band formed in 1977 by London singer-songwriter Dan Treacy.Earp, Joseph.The Missing Man Of Music: A Search For The Elusive Dan Treacy Of Television Personalities. Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Neo-psychedelia
Neo-psychedelia is a diverse genre of psychedelic music that draws inspiration from the sounds of 1960s psychedelia, either updating or copying the approaches from that era. Originating in the 1970s, it has occasionally seen mainstream pop success but is typically explored within alternative rock scenes. It initially developed as an outgrowth of the British post-punk scene, where it was also known as acid punk. After post-punk, neo-psychedelia flourished into a more widespread and international movement of artists who applied the spirit of psychedelic rock to new sounds and techniques. Fire Records is a British independent record label, run by James Nicholls, with offices in London, England and New York, USA. The label was founded by music journalist Johnny Waller and Clive Solomon in 1985 and released early records from Pulp, Teenage Fanclub (on subsidiary label Paperhouse), Spacemen 3 (formerly on Glass Records), Blue Aeroplanes, Lives of Angels and others. ''Privilege'' is an album by English rock band Television Personalities. It was released in 1990 through Fire Records. The album was recorded as a trio, with former Swell Maps member Jowe Head and drummer Jeffrey Bloom accompanying Dan Treacy. Critical reception Jason Ankeny of AllMusic gave the album a positive review, describing it as "one of the group's most personal and dark records." ''Chicago Tribune'' critic David Levinsky wrote that "the LP suffers from overly lush production, supplying one too many monolithic synth chords." ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''.
