Dorothy Ross (historian)
Dorothy Ross (born 1936) is an American historian and Arthur O. Lovejoy Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. She attended Smith College and Columbia University and taught at Hunter College and at the University of Virginia before Johns Hopkins. Her books include the ''G. Stanley Hall: The Psychologist as Prophet'' (1972) and ''The Origins of American Social Science'' (1991). The Society for U.S. Intellectual History named the Dorothy Ross Prize after Ross to honor her work in the history of psychology and modern social science. She was married to Stanford G. Ross for sixty-two years before he died. She has two children and two grandchildren. The Annals Of The American Academy Of Political And Social Science
The American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) was founded in 1889 to promote progress in the social sciences. Sparked by Professor Edmund J. James and drawing from members of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore College, and Bryn Mawr College, the Academy sought to establish communication between ''scientific thought and practical effort''. The goal of its founders was to foster, across disciplines, important questions in the realm of social sciences, and to promote the work of those whose research aimed to address important social problems. History Of Social Science
The history of the social sciences has origin in the common stock of Western philosophy and shares various precursors, but began most intentionally in the early 19th century with the positivist philosophy of science. Since the mid-20th century, the term "social science" has come to refer more generally, not just to sociology, but to all those disciplines which analyze society and culture; from anthropology to psychology to media studies. The idea that society may be studied in a standardized and objective manner, with scholarly rules and methodology, is comparatively recent. While there is evidence of early sociology in medieval Islam, and while philosophers such as Confucius had long since theorised on topics such as social roles, the scientific analysis of human society is peculiar to the intellectual break away from the Age of Enlightenment and toward the discourses of Modernity.
