The Oaks Railway Station
The Oaks railway station served the community of The Oaks in Bromley Cross, Lancashire, England, from 1850 to 1950. History The station was possibly opened by the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe and West Yorkshire Railway (BBC&WYR) in January 1850, although an earlier date of 1849 is given by W. D. Tattersall in his book about the branch line. The station was a request stop until 1852. The short length original low height platform survives, as replicated at nearby Bromley Cross. It is from , and 2 miles, 438 yards distance from Bolton. The BBC&WYR was renamed the Blackburn Railway on 24 July 1851, and was amalgamated into the Lancashire and Yorkshire (LYR) and East Lancashire Railways (ELR) on 1 January 1858. It became wholly owned by the LYR in 1859 when the ELR amalgamated with the LYR. Bromley Cross
Bromley Cross is a residential area of South Turton in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. It gives its name to a larger electoral ward, which includes Eagley, Egerton, and Cox Green. Historically part of Lancashire, Bromley Cross lies on the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors. Bromley Cross railway station is on the Ribble Valley Line. In the 16th century, Arthur Bromley of Turton married Isabell Orrell, the granddaughter of the Lord of the manor of Turton. It is from this family the place derives its name. It is supposed that there may once have been an ancient cross in the locality, although no physical evidence of it has been found. L&YR Class 5
The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class5 were 2-4-2T steam locomotives designed by Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) John Aspinall and introduced from 1889 for local passenger work. Later batches included progressive modifications such as extended coal bunkers and belpaire fireboxes. The final batch built from 1911 to 1914 under George Hughes incorporating superheated boilers and belpaire firebox gave increased tractive effort, others were also rebuilt to this standard. When Hughes introduced his classification system in 1919, the more powerful superheated locomotives were designated Class6. The final examples were withdrawn in 1961. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) was a major British railway company before the 1923 Grouping. It was incorporated in 1847 from an amalgamation of several existing railways. Bromley Cross railway station, on Chapeltown Road in Bromley Cross, a suburb to the north of Bolton, England, is served by the Northern 'Ribble Valley' line north of Bolton. The station is just south of the point where the double line merges into one.
