The Nutcracker (1994 Film)
''The Nutcracker'' ( rus, Щелкунчик, Shchelkunchik ) is an 1892 two-act "fairy ballet" ( rus, балет-феерия, balet-feyeriya) set on Christmas Eve at the foot of a Christmas tree in a child's imagination. The music is by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, his Opus 71. The plot is an adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story '' The Nutcracker and the Mouse King''. The ballet's first choreographer was Marius Petipa, with whom Tchaikovsky had worked three years earlier on ''The Sleeping Beauty'', assisted by Lev Ivanov. Although the complete and staged ''The Nutcracker'' ballet was not as successful as had been the 20-minute '' Nutcracker Suite'' that Tchaikovsky had premiered nine months earlier, ''The Nutcracker'' soon became popular. Since the late 1960s, it has been danced by countless ballet companies, especially in North America. Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo
The company Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo (with a plural name) was formed in 1932 after the death of Sergei Diaghilev and the demise of Ballets Russes. Its director was Wassily de Basil (usually referred to as Colonel W. de Basil), and its artistic director was René Blum. They fell out in 1936 and the company split. The part which de Basil retained went through two name changes before becoming the Original Ballet Russe. Blum founded Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, which changed its name to Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo (note the singular) when Léonide Massine became artistic director in 1938. Nicholas Sergeyev
Nicholas Grigoryevich Sergeyev (1876–1951) (russian: Никола́й Григорьевич Серге́ев, variously written in the Latin alphabet as Nicholas or Nikolai Sergeev, Sergueev or Sergueeff etc.) was a Russian ballet dancer, choreographer and teacher, and Theatre director, regisseur of the Imperial Ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. Vasili Ivanovich Vainonen, also spelled Vasily (russian: Васи́лий Ива́нович Вайно́нен) (1901-1964), was a renowned Ingrian Soviet choreographer, mainly for the Kirov Ballet, now known as the Mariinsky Ballet, with which he worked from 1930 to 1938. At 19 years old, he began choreographing works, mostly for smaller concert stages and, quickly, made a name for himself.
