''The Night Before Christmas'' (russian: Ночь пе́ред Рождество́м, ''Noch pered Rozhdestvom'') is a 1951 Russian animated feature film directed by the "grandmothers of the Russian animation", Brumberg sisters, and produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. The film is based on Nikolai Gogol's 1832 story "Christmas Eve (Gogol), The Night Before Christmas". The animation features heavy use of rotoscoping, known as "Éclair" in the Soviet Union, and is an example of the History of Russian animation#Socialist Realism, Socialist-Realist period in Russian animation. The film is in the public domain in Russia and is widely available on numerous Home video and DVD releases, mostly along with other films. Mikhail Yanshin
Mikhail Mikhailovich Yanshin (russian: Михаи́л Миха́йлович Я́ншин) (20 October 1902 – 17 July 1976) was a Soviet Union, Soviet stage and film actor. Biography Yanshin was born in the city of Yukhnov, located in the present-day Kaluga Oblast. As a young man he worked as a carpenter. In 1919 he volunteered for the Red Army. Following the Russian Civil War, he enrolled at the school of the Moscow Art Theatre, where his classmates included Mikhail Nikolayevich Kedrov, Mikhail Kedrov and Boris Livanov.Е. Полякова. He joined the theatre's company in 1924 and remained a member of the institution until his death. Fyodor Savelyevich Khitruk (russian: Фёдор Савельевич Хитрук; 1 May 1917 – 3 December 2012) was a Soviet and Russian animator and animation director. Biography Khitruk was born in Tver (Russian Empire), into a Jewish family. He came to Moscow to study graphic design at the OGIS College for Applied Arts. He graduated in 1936 and started to work with Soyuzmultfilm in 1938 as an animator. From 1962 onwards, he worked as a director. His first film ''The Story of a Crime'' was an immense success. Today, this film is seen as the beginning of a renaissance of Soviet animation after a two-decade-long life in the shadows of Socialist realism. An animator is an artist who creates multiple images, known as frames, which give an illusion of movement called animation when displayed in rapid sequence. Animators can work in a variety of fields including film, television, and video games. ''The Night Before Christmas'' (russian: Ночь передъ Рождествомъ, ''Noch pered Rozhdestvom'') is a 1913 silent film made in the Russian Empire by Ladislas Starevich, based on the 1832 tale of the same name by Nikolai Gogol. Unlike most of Starevich's films, it is mainly live-action. Plot The plot is, on the whole, close to Gogol's classic tale. The action is set in a Ukrainian village. On Christmas Eve, a minor demon arrives to a local witch called Solokha. They both ride on the witch's broom, after which the demon steals the Moon and hides in an old rag. In the ensuing darkness, some inebriated Cossacks can't find their way to a ''shinok'' (tavern) and decide to go home.
