Georgette Harvey (December 31, 1884 – February 17, 1952) was an American singer and actress. She is perhaps most famous for creating the role of Maria in the original Broadway production of '' Porgy'' (1927) and the 1935 Broadway production of George Gershwin's opera ''Porgy and Bess''. Biography At age 18 Georgette Harvey left her native St. Louis, Missouri, for New York City. She formed a quartet, the Creole Belles, that performed briefly in the U.S. before going to Europe. After some years the group disbanded but Harvey stayed on, performing in nightclubs and cabarets. She lived and performed in Russia for 16 years, and left at the outset of the Russian Revolution. Adora Andrews (March 19, 1872 – September 18, 1956) was an American actress, working mainly on stage from the 1890s to the late 1930s. Early life Andrews was born in Denver, Denver, Colorado. Career As a young woman, Andrews was noted for her gowns and hairstyles. In 1898, her photograph appeared in newspapers, because she was wearing a white silk gown decorated with "5000 Beetlewing, beetle wings", used like beads for a decorative trim. Also in 1898, she posed for a series of illustrations for creating a hairstyle with a Pompadour (hairstyle), pompadour roll. "I can't tolerate the Paris pompadour, with its tight pug at the back," she explained. "I arrange mine lower, in the regular figure 8".
